About this listen

It started as just another interview. Young journalist Danielle Nadler agreed to call an old man who had lived 50 years in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Through their weekly conversations, the mountaineer boasts of his decades of outdoor survival only to eventually reveal his personal tragedies that drove him to life in the wild.

Without a Trace drops listeners into the California mountain town of Bishop alongside the man locals call Sierra Phantom just as he surrenders to life with an address, searches for a renewed purpose and a community with which to share it.

I LOVE this book — it's made me laugh and cry. Having lost my Father as well, I was caught off guard and had to sit in my work's parking lot, crying, while listening to the author, Danielle and Phantom talk about her Dad. I'm at the part where he meets up with Laura and her daughter and he retells the story of how his family died in Germany. I was speechless. I'm only half way in and can't get anything done, since I just want to listen. I bought the audible version and cannot recommend it enough! Danielle Nadler is an amazing writer. Scratch that! Novelist!!!

The author did an excellent job connecting the reader to the real-life characters in Bishop through her excellent descriptions of Phantom, and his surroundings. As I listened to the Narrator tell me about Phantom, his stories, and his life, I felt like I knew him. I'd been to his apartment, I'd seen him riding his bike, I pictured him sitting in front of the bakery tying his flies. I grew incredibly attached to Phantom and his past and what was to become of his future. I enjoyed reading about this wholesome person who lived a life most of us have only dreamed of doing on a really bad day at work. His first priority was to take care of those around him, even though that was not the life that was initially handed to him. I wish Phantom was someone I knew in my life, making the world better one fish at a time.

Author & narrator paint an amazing visual
