About this listen
Detective Joe "Preach" Everson, a prison chaplain turned police officer, is coming home. After a decade tracking down killers in Atlanta, and with a reputation as one of the finest homicide detectives in the city, his career derailed when he suffered a mental breakdown during the investigation of a serial killer who was targeting children.
No sooner does Preach arrive at home in Creekville, North Carolina - a bohemian community near Chapel Hill - than a local bookstore owner is brutally killed, the first murder in a decade. The only officer with homicide experience, Preach is assigned to the case and makes a shocking discovery: The bookstore owner has been murdered in exactly the same manner as the pawnbroker in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment.
With the help of Ariana Hale, a law student and bibliophile who knew the victim, Preach investigates the local writer's community. As their questions increase, a second body is found; this time eerily resembling the crime scene in a famous Edgar Allan Poe novella. Preach and Ariana realize that their adversary is an intelligent, literate killer with a mind as devious as it is disturbed - and that one or both of them may be his next target.

Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Story
He slips into their homes at night and walks silently into bedrooms where women lie sleeping, unaware of the horrors they soon will endure. The precision of the killer's methods suggests he is a deranged man of medicine, propelling the Boston newspapers and the frightened public to name him "The Surgeon". The cops' only clue rests with another surgeon, the victim of a nearly identical crime. Two years ago, Dr. Catherine Cordell fought back and killed her attacker before he could complete his assault.

So many books - so little time left!
Written in Blood by Layton Green turned out to be such a pleasant surprise! Green's writing has never pulled me in, but with his new book I will definitely be watching out for him
In the future.
I also enjoyed the narrating by Peter Berkrot. His voice was perfect for this story. At times he speaks low and gravely giving the impression of retelling a harrowing tale.
After reading the publisher's summary I thought this book sounded interesting. I found this more then interesting, I found this captivating! This storyline revolves around a decades old, multilayered mystery with too many twists to recount.
The protagonist starts out the in this story basically broken and seeing a psychologist. As the book progresses he becomes convinced that he's been beaten and someone's going to get away with murder. Every time he gets a clue there's another obstacle in his way. But there is a turning point...
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and give it my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS.
