About this listen

When Mr. Earnshaw brings a black-haired foundling child into his home on the Yorkshire moors, he little imagines the dramatic events which will follow. The passionate relationship between Cathy Earnshaw and the foundling, Heathcliff, is a story of love, hate, pity, and retribution, the effects of which reverberate throughout the succeeding generations.

Janet McTeer is amazing

Both readers, but especially Ms. McTeer, were phenomenal in this audiobook. I highly recommend this version of the classic.

PERFORMANCES ARE SUBLIME!

Heathcliff and Catherine survives the cruel tests of time, I found myself perplexed by the lack of likability of these two protagonists. Catherine is flighty and immature while Heathcliff is surly and mean. They both did things to hurt each other; is that true love? The fact that they love each other through the difficulties of their lives doesn't assuage the hurt they cause each other during their lifetime.

The setting is certainly luscious and the supporting characters are interesting. But, rather than find Heathcliff's undying love for Catherine as overwhelmingly romantic, I couldn't get past how cruel he was to everyone around him. It made me sad.

As a young woman, I was thoroughly entranced by Heathcliff's dark, brooding and romantic nature. But he is much less attractive to me now.

I know I will be cast aside as a renegade and maybe even a fraudulent English major. But, there are more intriguing protagonists who are brooding and romantic in literature that I found more likable -- Mr. Darcy and John Thornton, for example.

The narration by Janet McTeer and David Timson was luscious and wonderful, particularly Ms. McTeer's. It was a delight to the ears and I loved hearing every second of it.

What a love story

Classic love story that goes a little beyond. I liked the narration however, the servant Joseph’s accent was not understandable. I would have to read the book to see what he actually said all those times and then maybe that still wouldn’t help.

Excellent Reading

I love the darkness that Heathcliff's love of Catherine becomes and the way this story plays out. But I especially love this audio version because of Janet McTeer's reading. The first time I listened, I literally gasped when she started reading because her voice is so soothingly perfect for storytelling. When I'm stressed and can't sleep, I love to listen to my iPod. McTeer's narration makes me feel like there is nothing more in the world but the story that her voice gives.

Best listen so far

Listening to this version of Wuthering Heights was absolutely riveting. Normally I don't like multiple readers but it worked very well for this production. I am left trying to decide if this is a love story or a tale of horror because the portrayal of Heathcliff as a seriously mentally ill man was so strong.

Heavily accented character

Wuthering Heights is a must read classic. This Audio book version was read very well with the exception of the character of Joseph. I felt like I had lost most of all of what is said by Joseph due to the narrators heavy accent.

Wuthering Hts., so intense and dramatic!

I hadn't read this in many years and had forgotten most of it, but this audio version brought it back with new lustre and was beautifully read with great emotion and intensity. I thoroughly enjoyed it and had a different take on some of the characters than I did when I was younger! I'd never thought of the importance Nelly played in the story, but she was often the catalyst. A wonderful story with exciting characters.

So much better than the movies

Would you listen to Wuthering Heights again? Why?

Over and over again. It is such a compelling story.

Which character – as performed by Janet McTeer and David Timson – was your favorite?

Heathcliff, definitely.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was pretty horrified by it. In the films based on this book Heathcliff is presented as lovelorn and obsessed, but in the book he is rather a fiend. The ending was very compelling.

Wuthering Heights Unabridged

The first time that I read Wuthering Heights,it was in the original text and was hard to get into, but worth it when I realized the importance of it to set the mood and atmosphere. Listening to this version was not like hearing the origninal dialect, but so well worth listening to because of the remarkable readings of the actors that brought it to life as I remembered it.
This audio version held up to the story that I have loved for many years.
