About this listen

The wild and passionate tale of Cathy and Heathcliff's impossible love for each other and its phenomenal setting on the blasted Yorkshire moors has to be one of the best-known love affairs in literature.

When it was first published in 1847, Wuthering Heights was greeted with a fair degree of outrage, not only for the open description of desire and disaster but for the almost unheard of method of telling the story using unreliable witnesses whose tales and points of view open out from each other, leaving the audience to piece together the truth of the story.

Only such novels as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein had previously attempted to challenge the reader in this way, and it is only in the last century that the true genius of Emily Brontë's work has begun to be appreciated.

Prepare to be as swept up and buffeted by the extraordinary power of Brontë's storytelling as Cathy and Heathcliff are by the winds of Wuthering Heights.

Narration brings story alive

Juliet Stevenson perfectly sums up my feelings about Wuthering Heights at the end of her narration. I loved and romanticized the book as a young girl, but as an adult I see the tragic selfishness of the couple that leads to so much misery. Stevenson does s beautiful job as narrator.

On old favorite

Once again, Juliet brings to life another Bronte classic brilliantly.
This novel should only be read UNABRIDGED to fully appreciate the complexity of the story. The novel has so many characters that struggle with adversity, obsession, and forgiveness. I had always thought of Wuthering Heights mainly as a romance between Catherine and Heathcliff? Think again!

Juliet Stevenson is Amazing!

Before I purchased the book I listened to several different samples and I immediately fell in love with Juliet Stevenson’s voice and how incredible of a job she did on narrating this classic novel. The story overall wasn’t the best and it is definitely not going to be going down as one of my favorite books or even one of my favorite classics, but Juliet Stevenson made this book sound magical and I would listen to it over and over again just to hear more of her voice. I am so very thankful that she has narrated several different classic novels as well and I am looking forward to getting around to them all.

Juliet Stevenson is phenomenal

A tumultuous tale of love and loss, oppression and redemption, narrated with common sense and deep sensibility.

Classic literature at its best

Stevenson emulated each character with perfect poise. From all of Heathcliff's complexities to the adolescent Isabella, the novel was retold beautifully.

Great Narration

There are a dozen or more audio versions of Wuthering Heights out there. It might be hard to choose from the 5-minute samples you can listen to. Look no further; this is the one to get. Juliet Stevenson can make you believe she's anyone. She's the Meryl Streep of audio. She's faithful to the thick Yorkshire accents, but manages to make them comprehensible. Even if you don't understand every word, she makes it easy to understand what they are saying.
As for the novel, don't chose it based on the syrupy movie versions that try to convince you Wuthering Heights is a love story and that Heathcliff is some kind of hero. He's awful to his family, to Catherine's family and to his beloved Catherine herself. But that's sort of the point. Be forewarned; this novel isn't a romance, but an anti-romance. It'll cure you of any and all romantic notions you might have suffered from after reading sister Charlotte's book. But again, that's the point. The characters, with all their exaggerated frailties will stay with you a lot longer than your average romance novel.

Fantastic narration, surprising story

Wow - Spectacular

I came to this novel expecting something more romantic and not nearly so dark. In fact, the book is much more interesting than the maudlin romance I'd set myself to plow through. The reader is amazing and really brings the book to life.

Magnificent reader, harrowing book
