About this listen

"Things like crowns had a troublesome effect on clever folks; it was best to leave all the reigning to the kind of people whose eyebrows met in the middle."

Three witches gathered on a lonely heath. A king has been cruelly murdered, his throne usurped by his ambitious cousin. A child heir and the crown of the kingdom are both missing. The omens are not auspicious for the new incumbent, for whom ascending this tainted throne is a more complicated affair than you might imagine - particularly when the blood on your hands just won't wash off, and you're facing a future with knives in it.

Critic reviews

"One of the pleasures of the book is the way in which literary classics float effortlessly through them in a way that would be pounced on as inter-textual in another author but is never allowed to become strident or alienating in Pratchett's work." (Guardian)

Great, but would have been better unabridged

Good points:
Story: Great.
Narration: Perfect (Tony Robinson is second to none with his narration and voices for the characters).

Bad point:
This is an abridged version (unfortunately the current unabridged version is not an alternative as it has been ruined by Celia Imrie).

Great Book - Appaling Narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I have listened to, and greatly enjoyed, the Discworld books to date; and would have done so here if the narrations had been of the standard of the others. It is not, it is so poor that the book is grossly undermined. I'd happily buy it again if a competent narrator were given it to do-over.

Sadly I don’t think I’ll ever hear the story properly

I came here desperate to get a version that wasn’t narrated by Imrie. But the story here is more butchered than I would like. If I hadn’t heard the other version I don’t know if I’d be able to follow the plot at all. I love Terry Pratchett but I think the other two male narrators are what really bring the stories to life.

Good story bad sound quality

Fan of the book, but the recording is not great quality. There is a bit of white noise in the background and some of the characters are louder than others so I either struggle to hear some or it feels like others are screaming in my ears (listening with head phones).

poor performing and missing a LOT of the story

a rare swing and a miss for discworld audiobooks. generally they are very good and casting and performance but this one is AWFUL! the reader doesn't know how to pronounce names, the accents are terrible and do not match the characters as they are described. the abridged label was not clearly listed and so I got this one by accident as it was, but honestly, half the story is literally missing! they cut out major chunks of plot, entire sections of characters meeting and starting relationships, they cut the end of a rescue off so I guess everyone just died in this version. even knowing this story inside and out, backwards and forward, they cut so much out and it jumps around so much I had to just shut it off ave delete it because none of it is making sense! this is the first time I've ever done that with any book, ever. just bad, really really bad.
