Story
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

In early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan’s story. In 2014, Koenig's investigation turned into Serial, a Peabody Award-winning podcast with more than 500 million international listeners.

Board of Education before the US Supreme Court when he became embroiled in a case that threatened to change the course of the civil rights movement and to cost him his life. Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature. Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career - the successes as well as the failures - to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action.

From the outside, the prosecution's case looked bulletproof, but Marcia Clark knew better. Mountains of physical evidence connected O. J. Simpson to the murders of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman, but that didn't mean it would be easy. For the woman charged with prosecuting the "Trial of the Century", the light of fame would glow white hot, as the media scrutinized her strategy, her family, even her hair. As the case spun out of control, Marcia Clark stood tall.

To this day, the LAPD, Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, mainstream media, and much of the world at large remain firmly convinced that O. J. Simpson literally got away with murder. According to private investigator William Dear, it is precisely this assuredness that has led both the police and public to overlook a far more likely suspect. Dear now compiles more than 16 years of investigation by his team of forensic experts and presents evidence that O. J. was not the killer.

Go Behind the Scenes of
Brooklyn North
Our favorite moments from
Brooklyn North
An investigative and emotional look at wrongful convictions
The dark history of the racist mechanisms behind America’s mass incarceration and criminal justice systems is well documented (The New Jim Crow, American Prison), as is the devastating reality of wrongful convictions and false confessions (Just Mercy, The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist). Brooklyn North, a 10-part podcast centered on four Black men wrongfully convicted during the height of the war on drugs, is an essential entry in this canon, even if you’re familiar with these previous works. The podcast format lets you hear directly from those whose lives were upended by a corrupt system (and some notably bad actors) as well as from the journalists, family members, and legal experts who bring additional context to the narrative. Following the thread all the way to the Black Lives Matter protests this summer, Brooklyn North—incredibly—ends on a note of hope, elucidating how we can and must work together to create a fair and egalitarian justice system for all.

Featured Article: Challenging Racial Bias in True Crime Stories
In cases involving Black and Brown victims, the reporting of true crime is its own kind of injustice. Bad things happen to Black and Brown women every day. But no one is talking about the color of their hair and eyes, their job, their education, or how much they are loved by family and community. Discover a growing gamut of podcasts that runs from deep-dive single case investigations to compilations focusing on missing and murdered Black women.

A Must Listen!! What you Dont Know Can Most Certainly Hurt You!!!!
Kudos to the researchers and great minds behind this series. It was both moving and eye opening! People seem to think that just because we are seeing some Police reform that this is enough, but the courageous men in these stories are living proof that abuse of power and police brutality leaves decades if not generations of pain and residual collateral damage. Hearing how kids were ripped from homes, fathers losing their children. Those who are in a position to effect change need to listen and use their influence so there aren’t any more wrongful conviction cases!!

Heartbreaking, heart opening, hopeful for change
This true story makes me cry and feel ashamed to be a human. I can only hope that the truth being told will be heeded and that we can become a more civil people on the planet. I am repeatedly struck by the grace and dignity of these men in the telling of their experiences, and only hope that we can all learn from them. Can’t we all just get along?
