Dr. Nandita Gupta is a physician executive and a Chief Medical Officer at Peace Health, a faith-based not-for-profit health center serving Oregon, Washington & Alaska. She is a practicing cardiologist and advocate for leadership development and a thought leader on Executive Presence. She has 25 years of clinical experience and nearly 2 decades of healthcare leadership experience as Chief of Medicine, Chief of Cardiology, Cardiovascular service line director, Associate CMO and now CMO. She has been recognized as a top cardiologist in the Portland Monthly magazine for many consecutive years, and is a recipient of the Oregon Medical association’s excellence in Health Equity award. She is a coach, mentor and a leader.

We discuss the importance of reading the room, the differing facets of executive presence, and how to develop it as a leadership skill that is especially critical for physicians, as none of this is taught in medical school. She also discusses the differences between clinical skills and leadership skills and how physicians and administrators can mindfully and intentionally develop their executive presence.

  • Episode 125: When Groups Merge But Their Cultures Don't
    Apr 15 2025

    Send us a text

Welcome back to the podcast where we dig into the business realities of medical practice—from strategy to staffing to leadership and beyond. If you’re part of a medical group that’s ever been through a merger—or even just considered one—today’s episode is going to hit close to home.

We’re diving into a topic that doesn’t always make the due diligence checklist, but it absolutely determines the long-term success or failure of any group merger: culture.

You’ve probably heard the old Harvard Business Review quote: Culture eats strategy for lunch. That line’s been floating around boardrooms for decades now. And it’s never been more relevant than in healthcare—especially when two or more medical groups merge.

Because here’s the truth: You can have the best financials, a perfect legal structure, a slick shared EHR, and a promising growth strategy. But if the cultures of the merging groups don’t align—or worse, actively clash—none of that matters. Your strategy won’t survive the day-to-day behavior of people who don’t trust each other, don’t communicate well, and don’t feel seen in the new reality.

  • Episode 124: Egos, EQ, and Influence: The Hidden Rules of Medical Leadership
    Apr 8 2025

    Send us a text

Today we’re diving into a topic that’s often whispered about—but rarely addressed head-on. In every medical group, there’s a silent script running behind the scenes. One that influences decisions, leadership roles, and even day-to-day operations. It’s not in your bylaws. It’s not in your policy manual. But it definitely impacts your group’s future.

We’re talking about the politics of practice. The power dynamics. The unspoken rules of leadership that determine who really holds the keys in your organization.

Understanding these dynamics isn’t about manipulation—it’s about mastering the art of influence, alignment, and strategic leadership. Because here’s the truth: ignoring the political landscape of your group doesn’t make you noble. It makes you vulnerable.

So in this episode, we’re going to unpack:

    • What office politics actually look like in the context of medicine.
    • The high cost—financial and cultural—of not understanding how the game is played.
    • Why medical groups often have a unique cocktail of big egos and low EQ.
    • And most importantly, how to lead in a way that cuts through the noise and creates a culture free of political mayhem.

  • Episode 123: Mastering the Metrics – Which KPIs Should You REALLY Track?
    Apr 1 2025

    Send us a text

You get what you measure. That’s the truth—whether we’re talking about healthcare, business, or even personal habits. In medical group management, this couldn’t be more important. The KPIs you choose to track will inevitably shape your decisions, your focus, and the behavior of your teams. Measure the right things, and you’ll drive alignment, efficiency, and growth. Measure the wrong things—or worse, measure nothing at all—and you’ll find yourself making decisions in the dark.

Today, we’re diving deep into the world of KPIs—Key Performance Indicators—and what you should really be tracking in your medical group. If you’re a physician leader, a practice administrator, or part of the C-suite in a private or hospital-affiliated group, this episode is for you.

  • Episode 121: The Private Practice Playbook – Financial Moves to Stay Independent
    Mar 18 2025

    Send us a text

Welcome to this episode, where we’re diving deep into a topic that could make or break the future of your private practice: financial strategy. If you’re a physician, practice manager, or administrator trying to navigate shrinking reimbursements, rising costs, and the ever-changing healthcare landscape, this episode is for you.

We’re going to talk about real financial solutions to help private practices stay independent—because here’s the truth: The cost of not addressing your financial health is enormous. It doesn’t just impact your revenue; it affects your staff, your reputation, and the overall well-being of your team.

Too many practices wait until they’re in crisis mode before taking a hard look at their financial strategy. But by then, options are limited. Physicians end up overworked, employees burn out, and the patient experience suffers. The best time to plan for financial sustainability is before you’re forced to—and that’s exactly what we’re going to tackle today.

    Mar 11 2025

    Send us a text

I am joined for this episode by Eric Gonzales, Senior Vice President and Healthcare Market Director for Umpqua Bank. We talk about how a banker can (and should) be one of the trusted advisors that physicians call upon when planning for new things, whether it is a new partner, a new service line or a real estate purchase.

We talk about different types of financing available and Eric details the process for applying for financing and how best to prepare. He outlines how supportive and synergistic your relationship with your banker should be, and what to look for as you seek a banking partner for your practice.

Eric can be reached via email at: ericgonzales@umpquabank.com and via LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ericgonzales/

  • Episode 119: The Revenue Rollercoaster: How to Stabilize Cash Flow in Uncertain Times
    Mar 4 2025

    Send us a text

Today, we’re tackling one of the biggest stressors in medical practice ownership—cash flow instability.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why your revenue fluctuates so much, why some months feel like you’re drowning in expenses while others feel just fine, or why no matter how hard you work, the financial security of your practice always seems uncertain—this episode is for you.

Here’s the hard truth: many medical groups are riding a financial rollercoaster, completely at the mercy of insurance reimbursements, seasonal slowdowns, and shifting regulations. And the worst part? Most physicians were never taught how to avoid it. They went to medical school to learn how to practice medicine—not run a business.

But the good news? There are practical solutions that can stabilize cash flow, reduce financial stress, and ensure a thriving, resilient practice. And it all starts with diversifying your revenue streams.
