Teach me about Crohns and inflammatory bowel disease - A to Z of the NHS - Dr Gill

We have ALL experienced diarrhoea from time to time whether that is the result of bad food or just bad luck, but imagine that this gastrointestinal upset was your day to day life. This can be the case for sufferers of inflammatory bowel disease whether than is Crohns or ulcerative colitis

Perhaps one of the clearest messages about inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohns disease is that it is an invisible disability, sufferers appear completely normal, but may privately deal with a myriad of issues, from as mentioned diarrhoea to urgency, blood loss, abdominal pain, to issues related to malabsorption

In this video on Crohn's we'll look at what inflammatory bowel disease means, look at the difference between Crohn's and it's sibling disease Ulcerative Colitis, as well as the investigations, such as colonoscopies, the classic medications, and the latest biologicals using antibodies to try and overcome these diseases of inflammation #Chrons #DrGill #Medicine

  • Understanding Vitamin B12 Deficiency - A-Z of the NHS - Dr Gill
    Feb 3 2021

Understanding Vitamin B12 Deficiency is one of those conditions that people are aware of or might have heard of - especially after Downton Abbey did a story on pernicious anaemia. But many people, even those who receive treatment have not often had anyone help them understands Vitamin B12 Deficiency

B12 deficiency is an essential vitamin, meaning that we must consume it in the diet. As such, vitamin B12 deficiency can be due to failure to absorb, or failure to consume and here we take a look at the overall B2 topic

  • Respiratory Examination Explained - Clinical Skills Deep Dive - Medical School Revision - Dr Gill
    Jan 30 2021

This Respiratory Examination Explained - Clinical Skills Deep Dive video looks at the details of the examination of a respiratory patient, highlighting what is being checked for during special tests and examination findings

In this video, we demonstrate how to perform a clinical examination of the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM for your medical school Clinical Skills OSCE. As the resp exam is sure a core skill when it comes to examining patients, students should assume that a respiratory assessment is a high yield station for any clinical exams or clinical assessments.

For a passing grade in your Clinical Skills OSCE, for resp examination follow the approach of: - Inspection - Palpation - Percussion - Auscultation

HOWEVER, a respiratory examination OSCE station does not just involve auscultating the lungs, this video also demonstrates some of the specialised examination techniques required in examining patients such as tactile vocal resonance, and checking the JVP which may be seen to be elevated in pulmonary hypertension. There are many parts of the respiratory exam, that overlap with the cardiac exam, thus these shared parts could be considered essential for any chest examination and always included as core medical school revision for clinical skills or OSCE prep

Coughs, colds and general concerns about the chest are a common reason for patients to see a doctor, and in any speciality is probably the most commonly performed patient examination

Abdominal Examination Explained - Clinical Skills Deep Dive - Medical School Revision - Dr Gill The Jugular Venous Pressure

It doesn't matter how many times I had the JVP explained to me in medical school lectures, or in medical school revision sessions after class, it always was a major challenge for me to understand.

However, if looked at carefully, and slowly, the JVP waveform, isn't actually impossible to understand, but does quite reasonably have a reputation as one of the more difficult clinical skill revision challenges

In this video we will try to carefully go over graphs of the venous pulsation to allow easy comprehsneion of teh JVP waveform explained

A Guide to Blood Pressure - A-Z of the NHS - Dr Gill

Understanding BP can be quite a challenge for patients, but actually interpreting blood pressure readings is very simple.

When people have children at home, the most important bit of medical kit they need is a thermometer, after that, ALL households should have a blood pressure meter

Blood pressure is the amount of force caused by blood pressing against the walls of your arteries - but there is quite a bit of science behind what the systolic and diastolic pressures and we are going to try and explain that here so you can understand the function of the blood pressure cuff, and how the pressures in the cuff relate to the calculation of the blood pressure

Dr Andy Stein joins us again to discuss blood pressure and discuss why blood pressure is a silent killer, and what can patients do to maximise the care of their own blood pressure in this A to Z guide to the NHS Enjoy!

  • A-Z Guide to the NHS - Atrial Fibrillation, ABG, Adverse Drug Reactions, & Autoimmune diseases
    Jan 25 2021

An A-Z Guide to the NHS - healthcare and medicine can be confusing and frightening at times. Latin derived names abound for diagnoses, symptoms and treatments.

This is a pilot episode for a possible series looking at an A-Z guide to the NHS - hopefully taking what we see as some of the commonest terms used in the healthcare setting and laying them out for easy consumption by patients, addressing the science with clinical anecdotes along the way.

Here we’re joined by Dr Andy Stein - a medicine and renal consultant to look over four important terms as we see them - atrial fibrillation, arterial blood gas tests, adverse drug reactions, and autoimmune diseases

These are going to be an overview so you’ll hopefully have a better understanding of terminology that might pop up in your own health care.

BUT this is going to be collaborative - please drop us things you’d like to see discussed in future. I know people have asked for information on rheumatoid arthritis and vitamin B12, this may be a forum that allows that to work.

Take care, please give us a big YES in the comments if you’d like this series to continue, and thanks for watching #Medicine #DrGill #A-ZofNHS
