Eine arme Holzfällerfamilie lebt im Wald. Als die Not besonders groß wird und es kaum noch etwas zu essen gibt, überredet die Mutter den Vater, ihre beiden Kinder, Hänsel und Gretel, ohne Vorwarnung im Wald auszusetzen.
