En af de unge studerende dør, mens hun agerer patient under en praktisk øvelse - og senere findes endnu en sygeplejeelev død i sin seng. Adam Dalgliesh får til opgave sammen med sin assistent Masterson at finde ud, om der var tale om hændelige uheld, selvmord - eller måske mord. "Døde nattergale" udkom første gang i 1971.
