About this listen

"Thrilling...emotional...amazing.... Words can't describe the feelings I have after finishing what was one of themost fantastic novels I have read to date." (Summer's Book Blog)

"It's 4am. I just finished this book, and I don't even know where to begin. I stayed up all night reading it. I kept trying to put it down, but itwouldn't let me. Lord, what a story." (Fangirl Moments & My TwoCents Blog)

"I need time to fully process what I just read but at this point PHENOMENAL won't cover it - It's THAT amazing!" (SizzlingPages Romance Reviews)

I don't know what I was thinking when I hired someone to attack me. Maybe I was bored, or lonely, or there was a void so deep inside of me that I needed something explosive to fill it.

It was supposed to be safe. A thrill. A way to break through the monotony of everyday life. It was an illusion of danger that I could walk away from as soon as it was over.

Except that it wasn't. Because I had been in danger long before I ever invited it into my life.

My mission is almost complete. The bubbling boil of vengeance that heats my blood might finally simmer.

She is the last piece of the puzzle. Once I destroy her, everyone who ever hurt me will have paid their debt.

It was supposed to be quick and easy, but as soon as I met her it got complicated.

Very complicated.

The only thing I don't like about this book is that it had to end.

Not a fan

The story was a little dramatic for me. I know I’m reading fiction but it was over the top in my opinion. I also didn’t enjoy the narration. SPOILER ALERT: it almost saved my rating a little bit when the ending seemed like it wasn’t going to be HEA, but then it was. I would have enjoyed that part that it was unpredictable.

An interesting story

This book left my feelings very confused! There were parts at both the beginning and end that I was really uncomfortable with, and I didn't live the epilogue. While the male narrator was a great narrator, the way that Tax's part was read at the beginning made him sound very disturbing and creepy. It may have made sense to the story but it intensified the discomfort mentioned above. All that being said, I do recommend the book if you like dark reads.

A Dark friends to enemies to lover's tale

This is a dark friends to enemies to lover’s tale that starts out as classmates sharing homework assignment and becoming friends to failed communications, jocks and loners, and bigotry, all tied in with one family ruling the town and everyone in it until ultimately someone seeks revenge for all the wrong done to him especially his “wombmate” sister. Shakespeare didn’t corner the market on tragedy. No, the author Nina Jones took it to another level and the consequences of those tragedies cost a town and many lives before a resolution comes if one can ever can come to one successfully. While by no means a “Romeo and Juliett” there is such angst and desire between the two MC’s that one can’t help but to read on to see what happens and to whom.
Tax, a hard aggressive take it all man rampages into Mia’s life to exact revenge on her for something of which she was not even aware. Sometimes needs override what is considered safe and consensual as Mia hires an agency to take her beyond traditional consent. This action can twist those words and because of who performed that action, throughout the book there is that battle within. Then again following up with deadly revenge there is no consent requested from the victim. The scenes are well described and world building is relatable because of the midwestern nature of the locales.

This was an audiobook presentation and most often the narration was emotional and believable however all too often Rock Engle come off as a whiny sniveling kid rather than the strong built man that arose from the ashes of disaster to become the powerful, controlling, intelligent vigilante he was. I believe a calmer yet frustrating action would have kept me within the bounds of the book.

Consumed me

Tax and Mia’s story consumed me.
Sil and Jude’s story destroyed me.

The blend of past and present was perfectly seamed.
This story will haunt me. The ending was complete, yet I selfishly want more.

More smut than story

More smut than story. The scenes were good but the male narrator really did make it less enjoyable.

What tangled webs we weave!!!

Not sure where to begin and I have not been to bed yet because I listened to this book since yesterday evening.
There are so many twists and turns while this story unravels. The tortured soles of all the main characters is so compelling. It leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat waiting to hear what will unravel next.
I wanted to hate the MMC but I found in the end I could not even though his actions at times were reprehensible and borderline abusive (sexually and mentally). I adored the FMC as she had such depth of character and because she was really kinky it helped offset some of the darker sexual happenings with the FMC.
I don’t want to give anything away. I want whoever listens to this to experience it for the first time like I did going into it, not knowing anything. It is definitely worth the credit and it is actually a well thought out and developed story which is something lacking in the dark romance genre a lot of the time.
Narration for the most part was compelling but for me for the first time in a really long time it was the story that kept me engaged and not the narrator. I can’t tell you how many times I have finished a book because the narration was so good it made me want to finish it.

DNF (story is great but couldn’t get past narration)

I stopped listening halfway because I couldn’t bear to listen to the male narrator’s performance anymore. Rock Engle has a nice voice but his performance is too over the top and grating. The cadence and emphasis on the prose felt unnatural; his narrations in dialogue were fine. I think finding that prose:dialogue balance is an issue for some narrators. You don’t want it too monotone on the prose like Jacob Morgan but too harsh like Alexander Cendese either.

The story is getting interesting so I’m just going to buy the ebook version and finish from there. I’ll definitely read more books from Nina G Jones though 😄
