Publisher's summary

In Devil's Gate

As a coroner, medusa Seremela Telemar has always felt more comfortable chatting over a dead body than over drinks. But when her wild niece, Vetta, runs off to Devil's Gate, a lawless town that has sprung up overnight in a modern-day gold rush, she knows she has to extricate her before the rebellious girl gets into real trouble. Though she's confident in her head snakes' ability to defend her against attackers, Seremela is still a bit nervous about braving this modern-day Wild West by herself.

Vampyre Duncan Turner is not about to let his new co-worker go into that chaos alone. His Vampyric power and lawyer smarts make him the perfect ally, and the fact that he already had his eye on Seremela for more personal reasons, doesn't hurt matters. Any romantic thoughts pull up short, however, when they arrive at Devil's Gate and learn Vetta is set to hang by morning.

In order to save Vetta and themselves, Seremela and Duncan are going to have to fight fire with force and magic with fangs. And pray they make it out of Devil's Gate alive.

In Hunter's Season:

As a palace guard and assassin for the Dark Fae, Xanthe always wore a mask, hiding her emotions to do her duty. But when her identity is compromised, she trades undercover work for guarding Queen Niniane - a position that often brings her in contact with Chancellor Aubrey Riordan. Aubrey's trust is shattered. A year ago his wife tried to assassinate their new queen in his name, a betrayal of everything he believes in. And now an attack on his life is proof the dark conspiracy is not yet over. Although injured and weak, Aubrey can't help but be drawn to this shy assassin and loyal protector. Xanthe is everything Naida wasn't, and the passion she stirs in him is something he thought had long passed him by.

Wonderful

What a fun read of two novellas with characters I wondered and hoped would have more written about them. Seremela, a medusa, and Duncan, a vampyre lawyer, go on the hunt in a very bad place for Seremela's wayward niece. Xanthe, royal guard in Adrial, and Aubrey, Royal Chancellor of Adrial, are forced together (much to Xanthe's delight) as Xanthe hides him from assassins and nurses his sword wounds. Both are a tiny bit steamy but mostly tender and loving. A very nice addition to the Elder Races series.

To the front of the queue

I set aside every other book to read the next Thea Harrison book
The characters the story and the performance are always top notch
The stories tie together seamlessly but can be read separately

Author Knows How To Spin A Tale

Ms Eastlake begins her very talented male voices in this book. Yum
Author is most educated with Graduate degrees and does her homework. Her gift as, ln Devils Gate, shows off her expanding imagination, to give more stories to her fans that do not get tedious. This one was so creative and the spin on medusa was lol funny eg: cocktail party. l re listen to the opening scenes a couple of times because I didn't believe what I was hearing. Funny! I love Dragos and I love baby stinkpot, but l have really enjoyed the moonshadow box set because it shows off the authors great talent to spin off into diverse characters and stories. Very few authors are in JD Robb 40+ book series
were my comments of help?

Devils' Gate and Hunter's Season

What made the experience of listening to Destiny's Tarot the most enjoyable?

Really happy that the powers that be choose to use the same narrator for the short stories as they have for the books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Xanthe: She was a secondary character in Devil's Gate then became a primary character in Hunter's Season. Although Ms Harrison does a lovely job of making these stories as complete as possible, the development of Xanthe is stronger because of her appearance in both stories.

What does Sophie Eastlake bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have read all of the books, stories and novellas. Sophie Eastlake does a wonderful job with the voices, the phrasing and pacing. Her male voices are subtle and unforced sounding which is so great.

Part two of the Elder Races tarot card quartet

Destiny's Tarot follows a unique deck of fortune-telling cards that a runaway teen steals at the end of Divine Tarot. Seremela, a medusa, heads into the wilds of a modern day gold rush to extract her niece from a lawless tent city near Devil's Gate.

Readers familiar with the Elder Races series will recognize Seremela as the coroner who helps with investigations in other books. Duncan Turner has also made cameo appearances a premiere attorney in the vampire community. Their hopes of finding Vetta quietly goes out the window when they learn that she is to be hanged the next day. The actual assassin helps them escape, and Vetta is all to happy to give the cards into her keeping.

Xanthe takes them back with her to the dark fae realm, but despite having this powerful tool, it cannot save Chancellor Aubrey Riordan from falling victim to a brutal ambush that leaves him almost dead. The plot runs at a slow pace since the narrative focuses on Aubrey's convalescence with Xanthe.

The narrator does a good job, and fans of the Elder Races series will enjoy getting to know these characters better.

2 in 1 anthology.

The cards move on. In this we get two more random stories about the were world in this book. Both are good for the short amount of pages put in the book. I enjoyed going back to this world. Narration was good.

Devil’s Gate: Medusa & Vampire go to Devil’s Gate to save niece.
Hunter’s Season: Dark Fae x2

In my opinion the best book in this series is Dragon Bound and Oracle’s Moon and I am an expert in my opinion.

2 novellas in one

Devil’s Gate

I really liked Seremela and Duncan in Serpents Kiss. So I was happy I got to read about them coming together.

Duncan’s a Vampire and was Carlings attorney, he had a short part in her book but I liked him and I thought he left a lasting impression.

Seremela was a medical examiner that helped Carling and Rune learn more about vampirism from a medical standpoint. She was bookish and a bit nerdy imo. But I didn’t get that impression in this story.

In this book her niece has run away to an unsavory encampment and Seremela’s sister asks her to retrieve her. When Duncan finds out what she is about to do, he goes with her. He can’t stand the thought of her being in danger. He has clearly been crushing on her and has finally decided to make his intentions known. I loved their chemistry.

Hunter’s Season

Xanthe is an assassin for the dark fae Queen. After her last mission went a little esque (in the last book) it was decided that she was no longer available to be used on undercover missions. Instead she became the Queens bodyguard.

Aubrey was the chancellor to the dark fae court and an honorable man. Xanthe had a crush on him from afar for many years. When Aubrey is attacked and injured, Xanthe is chosen to guard and nurse him back to health.
