About this listen

This is what happened: I met him at the candy store. He turned and smiled at me and I was surprised enough to smile back. This was not a children's candy store, mind you, this was the kind of place you went to buy expensive imported chocolate truffles for your boss' wife because you felt guilty for having sex with him when you were both at a conference in Milwaukee.

Hypothetically speaking, of course. I've been hit on plenty of times, mostly by men with little finesse who thought what was between their legs made up for what they lacked between their ears. Sometimes I went home with them anyway, just because it felt good to want and be wanted, even if it was mostly fake. The problem with wanting is that it's like pouring water into a vase full of stones. It fills you up before you know it, leaving no room for anything else.

I don't apologize for who I am or what I've done in or out of bed. I have my job, my house, and my life, and for a long time I haven't wanted anything else. Until Dan. Until now.

Can't get enough!

Megan Hart is a master. She knows how to weave a story that features real characters who love and live.. but also suffer and cry. Their lives are far from easy. In fact most are painful, but the author finds a way to explore their deepest secrets with beauty and grace. She helps the reader find the light even in the darkest circumstances. Don't we all need a little of that? Hope? I plan to download everything Hart writes. "Dirty" is Elle's story, but the title is deceiving. She is far from dirty. That's just how her mother's critcism and her abusive past make her feel. She is a woman with emotional scars (like so many of us) and she is trying to find a way to let go of the past and trust. If you like the story, listen to "Broken" because there you'll find out more about what happens to Elle. Don't listen to the critics that focus on use of the "F" word or the sex scenes. If you are squeamish about those sort of things, don't buy this selection. If you need a little hope, a little excitement, a lots of love this is for you!

Smudged

As others have mentioned already, this is an extremely odd book. I wouldn't call it erotic but rather a sexually explicit psychological drama. As far as the heroine's journey towards healing I think it works marginally well. I found it thought provoking in many respects. Unfortunately it still has elements of the romantic 'stock' characters - most notably the male love interest who has patience imagination and free time beyond what might genuinely be believed. And the sex, attached as it is to greivous psychological pain and compulsion, is rarely enjoyable and might just as well have been left out entirely - and I usually live for the 'good parts'!
To add further disappointment, Elenna Stauffer does exactly the same voices and tone in this book as she's done in every other frothy romance I've heard her read (and I have a 3 book a week habit so I've heard them all) and this book could truly have used something more subtle and nuanced.
I can only recommend this book as an intriguing failure if and when pickings are slim.

Great Listen!

I have to admit, after listening to Tempted and reading the other reviews, I had to listen to this one! I'm so glad I did, this was a fantastic book! The only reason I didn't give it a whole 5 stars was the narrator did not do men's voices very well. Makes Dan sound like a whispering smoker....but it's worth it!

The narration complaints are valid

This is a read only. I can usually ignore off narrators and I honestly thought the reviews were exaggerated but no. It’s damn near impossible to ignore how awful the voices are. I never got used to them. It’s jarring every time. I feel bad for piling on but seriously. It’s bad to the point of disrupting the story. Just read it.

This is the worst performance I have ever heard.

Would you try another book from Megan Hart and/or Elenna Stauffer?

Love Megan Hart's books and have bought a lot of them from you. l will never purchase another book by this performer.

What did you like best about this story?

Characters are very vivid and deep, you really feel the emotions they are going thru.

Would you be willing to try another one of Elenna Stauffer’s performances?

No, no, no! Her voice sounds like a little child and her men voices sound like frogs. I had read the book and she ruins the story.

Was Dirty worth the listening time?

Finally quit listening to it after 1/4 of book. Truly a horrible performance of a great story.

Any additional comments?

Wish I could have my money back. Very expensive for such a poor quality.

Read in this Order: DIRTY, BROKEN, STRANGER

Read in this ORDER: "Dirty", "Broken", then "Stranger".

Tears, joy, sadness, empathy... your emotions will flow.

Hart weaves characters from "Dirty" throughout "Broken" & "Stranger" making it personal, helping you identify more closely with the relationships.

I highly recommend these 3 books. The narrarator for "Dirty" is not the best. Keep in mind the story line and try to ignore the terrible male voices she tries to portray.

the reader sounds bad

I liked all her books but..this one I could not listen to. The reader ruined the book by her voice and I could not listen past the second chapter. I think that a good voice in an audio book is very important.

Dirty

Sensual, mysterious, and poignant, this book was rivetting. The complexity of Ell's story is nicely interwoven with the stories of those she befriends leaving the reader with a sense that we can be healed if we only allow ourselves to be open to compassion and love.
