Des is a trauma survivor, not a therapist. His books were inspired by his personal experiences years ago and in recent years. In the “Vietnam era,” when Des served with US Allied forces in Africa with an Airborne unit, no one had ever heard of PTSD. But we can be pretty sure that serving initially for two years as a teenager, then on active reserve (another 8 years), while juggling married life, raising a family, a full-time job in Advertising, night and weekend university (4 years), probably did create some form of trauma. While subconsciously, Des did many things now regarded as therapies over many years; it was only the need to be strong as a caregiver for his late wife of 59 years who had succumbed to dementia this past four years that Des began formal conscious therapy implementation from a specific genre: Somatic Therapy, the title of his first book. This study then led him to try and grapple with Attachment issues, which he dealt with in his second book, 'Attachment Theory Explained". The third book is a "two-in-one" publication comprised of both complete books for a small premium over buying a single book. His fourth book is Pregnant Dad, inspired by his experiences as a young father trying to deal with the multitasks of his early marriage described above. He chose to share these with new dads in the hope it might help as he had no reference to turn to at the time of his first pregnancy. Des is a "patient" practitioner of Somatic Therapy who studied CBT Therapy under Professor Luana Marques, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard's Medical School.
