Born and raised in New York City, Stern's early years in Greenwich Village were marked by punk rock, psychedelics, and a search for meaning. At 19, a chance encounter with yoga set him on a transformative path that would shape the rest of his life. Over the ensuing three decades, he has immersed himself in the study of yoga, philosophy, ritual, and Sanskrit, and science, spending many years studying in India. This deep dive into traditional practices laid the foundation for his unique, multidisciplinary approach to yoga. He founded Broome Street Yoga, where he teaches and trains teachers in classical yoga practices, called Yoga Sangraha. As an author, Stern has contributed to the field of yoga literature with several of his publications. His best-selling book, "One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga," explores the neurophysiological mechanisms behind yoga's effectiveness. His work reflects his commitment to bridging the gap between traditional practices and scientific research. Stern's impact extends beyond the yoga studio. He has worked in a variety of settings including gun violence reduction and underserved public education communities, running train-the-trainer programs to empower individuals to teach yoga in their communities. His Breathing App, Breathing App for Diabetes, and NYU Engineering Health programs bring the science of yoga into the homes of hundreds of thousands of people, along with the Yoga Education Collective platform he co-founded.
