Story
During her own year of transition—a milestone birthday, a wedding anniversary, the emptying of the nest—Walrond, in the buoyant and luminous style her listeners have come to love, does a deep dive into dimensions of getting older, including health, beauty, spirituality, connection, adventure, and meaning and purpose. Through conversations with social workers and neurologists, activists and clergy, Walrond satisfies her curiosity about why the dominant culture treats aging as a time of dwindling capacity.

Struggling
Reviewed: 11-26-23
I am struggling to get through this. Perhaps it was my expectations. It may "get there" but the set up to the foundation of "rebellion" is different to weed through with these opening antidotes. I may come back and finish it..but this may not be the time.

I have hoped for SO LONG, for a Mel Robbins

Perfect injection of guidance and hope!

The timing of this episode was perfect. I was listening to the news and was overwhelmed with all that is happening. I thought to switch to a Mel podcast to shift my mind away and was comforted to realize that Mel felt it too! Talking with Dr. Thema was what we all needed as we try to navigate the uneasiness in the world and balance it with our own issues and "wars". Great episode Mel. Thank you for being a safe place to land.

Story
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

Things I know but needed to hear
Reviewed: 12-23-22
The message of resting and its connection to capitalism and my enslaved ancestors were dots that I needed to connect. That alone was worth it. Her references to the black church experience were also critical and an important truth that is often overlooked.
However be mindful that the author repeats themselves directly or indirectly ALOT. If you can take the reiterating of important points, you will walk away with a new perspective on resting and why it is an act of resistance.

If you feel like success is for others, that only certain people get to have their dreams fulfilled, Eric Thomas’s You Owe You is your wake-up call. His urgent message to stop waiting for inspiration to strike and take control of your life is one he wishes someone had given him when he was a teenager—lost, homeless, failing in school, and dealing with the challenges of being a young Black man in America.

I really wanted to love this!
Reviewed: 10-06-22
I really struggled with this book and chose to stay with it through the end hoping at some point I would walk away with actual tactics that I could use. However 90% of this book is the author's story from his years in Detroit, his childhood, college, meeting his wife, church, how he began speaking etc... But most of that I knew because of other mediums. I came here expecting a different motivational and tactical message laced with strategy and it failed short of that.
I did enjoy hearing the different references about Detroit, given that I'm from that area and knew exactly what the author was referring to when he mentioned certain streets. That level of familiarity allowed me to have a little more grace than I normally would have. But by the 4th chapter of this book I was ready to move on to something else. I'm extremely disappointed, however this in no ways changes my support of the author and all of the inspirational work he has done in the past. No more 1st launches for me. I'll wait for reviews.

Story
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

These were the range of emotions that I went through during this journey with Viola it's Viola. The respect I have now for her season"now" has catapulted by leaps and bounds. Her upbringing bringing is so familiar and you will find tinges of it in almost every African American experience. I'm so grateful that she read her own book. No one could have told her story but her. It's a must read.

Story
According the New York Times’ “1619 Project”, America was not founded in 1776, with a declaration of freedom and independence, but in 1619 with the introduction of African slavery into the New World. Ever since then, the “1619 Project” argues, American history has been one long sordid tale of systemic racism.

Another fearful Napkin-American
Reviewed: 03-19-22
I tried to finish this just to be balanced. But it was evident that this author was simply offended, fearful and demeaned that her ancestors were disgustingly heinous murderers then AND now.
Get over it. They were.
Whatever the particulars...the documented facts remain:
1. White people stole, shipped and enslaved a race of people.
2. Put the enslaved on slave camps brutally beat, maimed, raped and murdered them as they used them for profit to build this nation.
3. Built (and continously build) rules and a system to protect their fragility and sick misnomers of superiority....(see 2nd amendment).
Stay mad. But it is what is. You can't "debunk" the truth about a race of people who would do that to other humans. It's this nation's blood drenched history and now people all over the globe are learning the WHOLE story about America's inhumane beginning. Knowledge is power.

Story
Losing our parents when we ourselves are adults is the natural order of things, a rite of passage into true adulthood. But whether we lose them suddenly or after a prolonged illness, and whether we were close to or estranged from them, this passage proves inevitably more difficult than we thought it would be. The Orphaned Adult guides listeners through the storm of change this passage brings and anchors them with its compassionate and reassuring wisdom.

I feel seen, heard and understood
Reviewed: 11-08-21
During this book, There were so many times that I found myself with my hand in the air like I was in the middle of a Baptist church service. Meaning, there were many things that this author said that I could attest to. He was able to verbalize my heart in a way that made sense. The goal wasn't necessarily to give you tools to deal with grief even though it accomplished that. But moreso how to deal with the overwhelming reality of being orphaned as an adult versus the stereotypical image of a child orphan. I lost my 1st parent in 2015 and my 2nd parent, my mom in August of 2021, which was barely 90 days ago. This book has helped me articulate what I think, how I feel and why I'm functioning the way that I am. It truly was a tremendous asset and I highly recommend it for any orphaned adult. You are not crazy. Your feelings of abandonment are valid and there is a way to navigate grief even in that reality.
