Excellent narrator & story
Reviewed: 02-12-25
This is one of my favorite books/series, both ebook & audiobook. The narrator is excellent, with a comfortable baritone voice & excellent skills in expressing the story. the story itself is very well written, combining humor, drama, suspense, & everyday life into a great plot.

Story
The usual result of a human taking a runaway semitruck head-on is a very sudden, very fast track to the pearly gates. But for one newly noncorporeal man, there's another option: become a dungeon. Feeling sorry for the desperate angel assigned to him, the man relents. Heck, if it doesn't work out, he can always chat with Saint Peter about it later. Next thing you know, he's a dungeon. Admittedly, a small run-down, somewhat unimpressive dungeon (more of a house, actually), but you gotta start somewhere, right?

Story
When the Night Foxes boldly break into the Fourth Precinct’s Evidence Building, it causes quite the stir. As a Magical Examiner, Henri Davenforth is immediately called in. To his astonishment, Captain Gregson has him work the case like a detective. More astounding, he assigns Henri a partner - The Shinigami Detective. The woman is famous for killing the most destructive rogue witch of the century, and no one is quite certain where she’s from. Every officer in the precinct is either in awe of her, or a little frightened by her. Henri is just baffled.

Like the story, but they hired the wrong narrator
Reviewed: 07-13-22
Like the story; read the kindle version first & wanted the audible. The issue is the main character is expressly described as having a husky alto voice. The audible version has a male and female narrator. The male narrator has a british accent, tenor voice that works well for Henry. But the female narrator has a grating saprano that throws everything off from what is expected. For a perky character, such as a young woman in an amateur murder mystery series, she would be fine, but she does not fit the persona the books build for Jamie Edwards. Other than the mis-matched narrator, the book is a good read.

Great story, boring narrator.
Reviewed: 10-27-21
I enjoy Blaze Ward & have read this ebook several times. The narrator does not do the story justice. For the most part she is simply a reader, with little inflection. She does do pretty well with different voices for the various characters. I have listened to many audiobooks where the narrator brings the book to life, but not this one. It is still a good book, and one I still recommend, but a different narrator could have made it much better.

Tedious to finish, only David Tenant kept me in it
Reviewed: 02-21-21
I much enjoyed the original book and the first sequal was interesting. The second sequal started to drag, but this one was simply tedious. If not for Mr. Tenant's excellent performance I would have closed out this final book within the first hour. Even his wonderful characterizations barely kept me going. I am not sure if I would have started the sequals (which are a single long story, not independant) if I had known how bad this last book is. Children may enjoy it and it may just be my adult perspective that made this book seem so bad.

This story is OK, not quite as good as Ian Fleming's, but still fun. David Tenant excels in bringing the characters to life & I would recommend the audiobook to hear the performance. The next book is not as good, but still worth hearing. The last book is simply tedious. Not even Mr. Tenant's terrific performance can save it.

“Before I can begin my tale, you need to know about the king's panties.” So begins the epic adventure of 14-year-old Nigel, digger of latrines, shoveler of poop, and the single greatest threat to all the humans, elves, and halflings of Esteria. Nigel needs to escape from military school. Who can blame him? After all, the king just declared war on the gorks, and he's pretty sure his latrine-digging skills aren't going to be much good on the front lines.

Slow & stupid.

Had to quit about one third of the way in. The desrciption indicates humor - there isn't. A stupid kid who gets in trouble for stupid pranks and never seems to learn. I don't like leaving a negative review but the only recomendation I can make about this book is to avoid it. Maybe if it got into something different but I just got tired of hearing the stupid pranks.
