Story
A murdered opera singer. A duke drenched in her blood. For Bow Street Officer Hugh Marsden, the brutal killing is a straightforward case. Ever since his exile from polite society, the chance to arrest a high and mighty peer of the realm has never presented itself. Hugh won't snub the opportunity now. But Audrey Sinclair, the Duchess of Fournier, is certain her husband is wrongly accused, and she's determined to prove it to the arrogant Bow Street officer, even if she must employ her most peculiar ability—or perhaps curse—to guide her investigation. After all, a duchess can do as she pleases.

Interesting look at the ton & working life
Reviewed: 09-16-24
Really enjoyed seeing both the Ton & working class folks through these two characters. The supernatural aspect is written in a believable way & the chemistry between the two main characters is palpable. Enjoyed the twist at the end as well regarding the murder. Super well done! Can’t wait to read/listen to the rest of the series!

Enjoyed this very much. Lots of interesting historical info of the lower classes. Really liked the main female protagonist. She was strong and worked hard to try to help her family, even doing things that she knew were awful to try to make it. A refreshing change from some of these helpless vixens in historical romance.

With an Agatha Christie flavor and romance thrown in, plus a touch of faith, this was one of Klassen’s best. Loved the details of the Abbey/Hotel and the cast of characters. The “mad doctor” and the brother’s storyline were incredibly interesting to me as a sufferer of depression/anxiety today. Her author’s notes at the end were informative and I’ll be looking up some of the research materials she used. Kept me guessing on whodunit as well, and usually murder mysteries don’t. I think this might be my fav of her books so far! Bravo.

Story
RITA finalist Julie Klassen has earned numerous awards for her popular historical romance novels. In The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, pampered Margaret Macy flees her home in London to avoid marrying a dishonorable man. Now, with no money and no place to stay, Margaret does the unthinkable: she takes a job as a housemaid in the home of two brothers - both of whom are former suitors. As an “invisible” observer, Margaret realizes she may have misjudged one brother and wonders if it’s too late to win his admiration.

Wonderful, intriguing story

This was maybe the best I’ve read by this author yet. Interesting story where you’re able to see the characters, including side characters not just main love interests, grow and change. Super interesting upstairs/downstairs element that reminds you of Downton Abbey but I like the “upstairs” characters here better than the ones on that show. So well done! (Speed the narrator up to 1.25; she’s good at accents but a bit slow!)

Lovely continuation

This story in second in the series and ends with several loose ends that set up the next book. It’s a lovely continuation, but don’t expect everything wrapped in tidy bows at the finish. This is clearly a saga story, and I appreciate that the women’s lives are told true to life rather than being rushed toward the altars.

Wonderful story - speed up the narrator
Reviewed: 02-18-24
I like this narrator but I sped it up to 1.3 bc she does read slowly. Really enjoyed the story and all the many characters. Author did an excellent job of world building in Ivy Hill. Flawed, real people, most with good hearts. Only one of the ladies ends up with a man, although I wonder if the one might choose a person in a future novel. There are Christian themes but it adds to the book and doesn’t taken you out of the story as some do. Nicely done. Read it!

Wonderful story - narration a bit slow

The narrator of this story is good but does read rather slowly. I sped it up to 1.3 and it was much better. The story itself is wonderful - with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. It kept me guessing until the big reveals came. I adore how it wove the teachings and truths of Jesus with regard to forgiveness and mercy throughout without feeling like it was whacking you over the head with it. It enhanced, rather than stood apart, from the overall story. The story was so interesting, compelling & well written. Don’t miss this one! I plan to try reading more from this wonderful author now.

Story
London, 1819. Richard, Marquess of Devon, is satisfied with his ton marriage. His wife of five months, Lady Eugenia Devon, thought she was, too, until she found the book. Their marriage is one of respect and affection, with no messy entanglements such as love. Devon's upbringing impressed upon him that gentlemen slake their baser needs on a mistress, not their gently bred wives. However, once married, he was no longer comfortable bedding a woman other than Eugenia.

Did not finish - narration & story problematic
Reviewed: 02-11-24
Even with the narration sped up to 1.4, I cannot handle Charlotte Anne Dore as a narrator. She enunciates each word so crisply that it’s honestly painful to the ear. She also speaks extremely slowly. The story isn’t the greatest - all about a husband who thinks he shouldn’t take pleasure with his wife, only with a mistress. She finds a naughty book at a bookstore & sets out to seduce her own husband. I just couldn’t suspend disbelief enough to get into it. No man is that averse to bedding his own wife unless he’s gay. Did not finish.

Terrible narrator
Reviewed: 01-28-24
As with the previous book in this series that featured the same narrator, the performance ruins an otherwise enjoyable book. Overacted, with squeaky female voices and overbearing attempts at male voices, each sentence is read as though it’s a telenovella. If you can, read the print version. This entry in the series is a bit slower paced, and I guessed the murderer about 2 chapters in. An okay story but not as compelling as the second one.
