Story
Combining historical research with an in-depth analysis of our modern political landscape, Erasing History issues a dire warning for America and the world: the worst fascist movements of humanity’s past began in schools; the same place so many of today’s right-wing political parties have trained their most vicious attacks. Yale professor Jason Stanley exposes the true danger of the right’s tactics and traces their inspirations and funding back to some of the most dangerous ideas of human history.

Surprised me that I have unacknowledged prejudices for being a liberal, educated, thoughtful, mature woman. Very timely placement of current US politics in historical context. Important wake-up call for Americans on creeping fascism in our leadership.

Very funny family relationships and conversations.Narrator never got in the way of the story. Narrator portrayed different character so they were clearly identifiable without using harsh or grating tones. Remarkable performance.

Train hijacking an interesting plot, but the gory scenes were depressing. The “good guys” eventually won, but at too large a detail of the suffering and death of the bad guys. Not all terrorist stories can be moderately violent, but the ugliness of human hate need not be in my face to make a good story. Maybe I’m just not someone who has been desensitized by extreme video games and so enjoys jacking up the violence to find satisfaction.

Narrator is hard to understand for a non French speaking listener.
Reviewed: 11-14-24
At least previous narrators would speak the French words and phrases in a way a non French speaking listener could look up the words phonetically. With this narrator it just sounds like mush. So I miss what he says next trying to figure out what he just said. I have listened to the book 3 times and still don’t really get the point of the story. I have every previous Louise Penny book and treasure them, with the notable exception of the one co-authored with Hillary Clinton, which was awful. Between the sub par narrator and an ill-conceived storyline, I feel like I want a refund on my money and my time. Louise, get a grip. Please find an interesting, engaging, enlightening storyline in Three Pines.

Story
US intelligence is reporting turmoil in the Russian navy. Their deadliest submarine, the Belgorod, has unexpectedly launched, and taken along with it a long list of questions. Who authorized the departure? What mission is it on? And, most disturbing of all, what weapons do the giant doors on the sub’s bow hide? It's been four decades since a similar incident with the Soviet sub, Red October, ended happily, thanks to a young CIA analyst named Jack Ryan.

I loved the submarine lore, the Navy jargon (being a former WAVE), and the personal stories and human relationships that felt very authentic. This is one of those audiobooks that I don’t want the phone to ring or anyone to come in to visit, because I am in the middle of an engrossing scene. Upholds Tom Clancy’s reputation. Never a lapse in the story. Loved it.
