I immediately felt I had landed in a particular place, which is a good sign. This author has a real knack for describing weather. It’s almost a character unto itself.

The narrator has saved his best, most engaging voice for Evan, the lead, but got many more just right too. This was a particularly good mystery with lots of lyrical Welsh place names and phrases thrown in. All in all, a satisfying experience on many levels.

This is an outstanding narrator who has that rare gift for believable women’s voices. But the story was quite good too. Be prepared for graphic descriptions of the black plague but the author drew me into this world in spite of the horror.

A wicked Scottish winter has just begun when pioneering female physician Sophia Jex-Blake calls on Detective Inspector Ian Hamilton to investigate the suspicious death of one of her patients - a railroad lineman who she believes succumbed to the horrific effects of arsenic poisoning. The most provocative aspect of the case doesn’t escape Hamilton: the married victim’s numerous sexual transgressions. Now, for the first time since the unexplained fire that killed his parents, Hamilton enters the Royal Infirmary to gain the insights of brilliant medical student Arthur Conan Doyle.

A clever plot mirroring a play

One of the things I enjoy about this series is the occasional quote from Shakespeare, Robert Burns, and others. In this particular episode, there is an ongoing preparation for a Shakespearean play in the background. This may be too much for some, but I found it a lot of fun. I do have one concern about these brothers in their digs. Who is doing their laundry? Those clean sheets don’t appear by magic. Who is cleaning their bathroom? Who is keeping their kitchen clean and doing their grocery shopping? I know this is fiction, but it seems impossible to me that these two extremely busy men don’t need help.

I was wary of something set in the 1880s, but this has been surprisingly engaging. I also picked this one because it was set in the city of Edinburgh, where I have been once and found it totally enchanting. It did take a moment to adjust to this narrator. But by the end, I thought he did a wonderful job. I particularly like the fact that he presents women’s voices quite well. I intend to try book 2, and I noticed it has a different narrator. I hope I like him as well as this one.

I chose this because of Connor Crais, whose dreamy voice was on a recent listen. The love scenes were very intense and affecting. The premise a bit too fantastical. Still, I don’t regret the time spent and the $1.50.

Outside, a howling blizzard. Inside, a crackling fire. Suddenly, being snowbound with the man she never expected to see again might not be such a bad way to spend a winter’s night.

Sweet story made more enjoyable by a narrator who can perform a believable man’s voice
Reviewed: 03-13-25
I worry when I see a two-hander with one narrator. If the portrayal of the voice of the opposite sex is jarring, the suspension of disbelief disappears. Or at least hurts the moment. This narrator does a wonderful job of a man’s voice, which in a romance is critical.
