Tune Out the World and Listen to Romance
Reviewed: 03-03-25
I read Abby Jimenez books when I really want to escape the world. I like listening to them with my Bluetooth hearing aides because I can put a book in my pocket, do my chores and tune out. It took me two Abby Jimenez books to paint my library. I could have done it quicker, but I was having a good time on a rainy weekend.

Story
Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she’s challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she’s sure the town’s readers need.

So relevant for today

I loved this book!! As the daughter of a mother who was a fiction writer and a father who worked for the local newspaper, I read anything and everything I could in the 1950’s. When I was 12 I discovered Truman Capote’s novel ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms’ in my parent’s library and started to read it. At first I was embarrassed about the homosexual story. But when my mom saw what I was reading, she simply asked if I wanted to talk about it. This was a great learning opportunity, which by the way, did not turn me gay. I am offended by those who would make choices for our kids and our grandkids about reading material. I am recommending this book to everyone I know.

I read Huckleberry Finn when I was a child and it was a book which shaped my childhood. James shall shape the rest of my adulthood. I listened to James as I went about my day and at the end I was transformed. If I could vote, this book would be the Pulitzer.

The New York Times best-selling novel from Garth Stein - a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope - a captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.

A Favorite Book is Now a Favorite Audiobook
Reviewed: 07-05-24
I read The Art of Racing in the Rain when it first came out and it is one of my favorite books of all time. As a dog lover I have rescued and loved many dogs over the last 45 years. It is easy to believe that some dogs, like Enzo, form human-like bonds with us. Certainly the book makes a powerful case that we are meant to travel though our lives and beyond with these magnificent souls by our sides. I highly recommend the audio version; it was such a treat to listen to it.

This story engaged me from the very beginning. It is an amazing journey by an extraordinary young woman. Dr Winn-Grant should be considered a hero to women for her total refusal to take anything less than what she believes is her right path. No matter what is thrown at her, she refuses to detour from the dream, and along the way she works tirelessly for endangered species and the survival of our planet.
I am a lifelong lover of books, who recently discovered audiobooks. It seems I can listen to a book while I clean my house, which is not a favorite activity. The story, as well as the excellent performance kept me enthralled and my house is spotless!

Diseases are simply molecules behaving badly
Reviewed: 01-25-24
I loved that this doctor quoted poetry and that it helped him make sense of his life. I am mostly a reader of fiction. After reading Cutting for Stone and The Covenant of Water, I was desperate to find another Abraham Verghese book, but could not. Of course I was delighted that Verghese wrote the prologue to this book, but When Breath Becomes Air is definitely on its own plane after that. Paul Kalanithi writes with such graceful connectivity, each sentence bouncing toward the next. I was listening to the book, but paused several times to write phrases down. One favorite: diseases are simply molecules behaving badly. No, the book is not fiction, but Kalanithi could definitely have written great fiction too, had he been granted more time.

An American Hero
Reviewed: 10-05-23
It was important for Cassidy to start with her family history, as it gave a full picture of how people can be taken in by charismatic politicians. While it distressed me that it took her so long to figure out he is only out for himself, her background and patriotism were the reason why. She is a very brave young woman and for that I am grateful. Knowing what is the right thing is quite different from actually doing it.
