Publisher's summary

In this vulnerable and urgent memoir, Rae Wynn-Grant explores the ever-shifting relationship between humans, animals, and the earth through her personal journey to becoming a wildlife ecologist.

Growing up in the diverse and bustling California Bay Area, renowned wildlife ecologist Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant always felt worlds away from the white male adventurers she watched explore the wilderness on TV. She dreamed of a future where she could spend sleepless nights under the crowded canopies of the Amazon and the starry skies of the savanna. But as Rae set off on her own expeditions in the wild, she saw nature’s delicate balance in a new light.

Wild Life follows Rae on her adventures and explorations in some of the world’s most remote locales. Hers is a story about a nearly twenty-year career in the wild—carving a niche as one of very few Black female scientists—and the challenges she had to overcome, expectations she had to leave behind, and the many lessons she learned along the way. An incredible journey spanning the Great Plains of North America to the rainforests of Madagascar, Wild Life sheds light on our pivotal relationship and responsibility to the natural world and the relatives—both human and otherwise—that we share it with.

Absolutely INSPIRING. The title is apt - it could also be ‘Live your PASSION - Follow your Heart - Be True to YourSELF’. Wild Life Wild Ride. I wanted this to book to keep going.

Follow Your Dream

This story engaged me from the very beginning. It is an amazing journey by an extraordinary young woman. Dr Winn-Grant should be considered a hero to women for her total refusal to take anything less than what she believes is her right path. No matter what is thrown at her, she refuses to detour from the dream, and along the way she works tirelessly for endangered species and the survival of our planet.

I am a lifelong lover of books, who recently discovered audiobooks. It seems I can listen to a book while I clean my house, which is not a favorite activity. The story, as well as the excellent performance kept me enthralled and my house is spotless!

Engaging and Eye Opening

Wonderful writing with such honesty and earnestness. This memoir provided insights into a young woman’s life journey and into her contributions as an environmental scientist. The adventures of her life were inspiring with all the cliffhangers of a good drama! Dr. Winn-Grant also has the perfect voice for sharing her own story. Well done.

honest telling of inspiring life story

Incredible, open, honest story teller. lovely voice, easy to listen to. wonderful for young BIPOC women and teens, great hs graduation gift, but I'm a 62 year old white woman in a very different field and I related to SO MUCH of what she shared. ultimately it is a story of a bright, committed young woman who has it all and still struggles and falls. a story of hitting glass ceilings and persevering through dark forests..literally and figuratively, of mom guilt and personal doubts.. you'll want to have a glass of wine with her around a campfire!

Performative Victimhood

I wish I would have liked this well-written book, but I did not. This woman cheated on her husband for a year and blames everyone else for it. I have no desire to read a book by someone with such low morals they would do this to another human being, especially one they claim to love. This book, for me, was just a self-serving narcissist.
