I could not step away from this story line. Every page kept me guessing about motives and who did the bad deeds. Importantly, this book does an excellent job of showing how the rape of one woman can impact so many lives and just how easily and often rapes happen without consequences to the rapist.

After a traffic stop turns violent at the hands of the police, a young Black teen grapples with racism—and what it means for his future. Critically acclaimed author Nic Stone boldly tackles America’s troubled history with race relations in her gripping debut novel. Justyce is a good kid, an honor student, and always there to help a friend—but none of that matters to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs without cause. When faced with injustice, Justyce looks to the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers. But do they hold up anymore?

I purchased this book because I read somewhere that it was banned or a teacher received flack for assigning it. The author skillfully brings you the experience and thoughts of young black men in America. Literature should bring you experiences you can’t or don’t have and help you understand another’s perspective and this book receives 5 stars for that. I’m so glad I read it!

Story
Richmond, Virginia 1811. It’s the height of the winter social season, the General Assembly is in session, and many of Virginia’s gentleman planters, along with their wives and children, have made the journey to the capital. On the night after Christmas, the city's only theater is packed with holiday revelers. In the middle of a performance, the theater goes up in flames. Based on the true story of Richmond’s theater fire, The House Is on Fire offers proof that sometimes, in the midst of great tragedy, we are offered our most precious—and fleeting—chances at redemption.

Sometimes stories told from different perspectives become confusing and it’s easy to lose the thread. Not this one! Characters are so vivid that you are almost immediately invested
In them. I would love a sequel that follows Cecily through her next phase.

Wow! Before this book I knew that opiods were given out like candy in some parts of the country, but I was not aware of the deliberate marketing efforts of Purdue and the Sackler family. Informative, well researched and as balanced a report as one can do on a handful of people responsible for the destruction of hundreds of thousands of lives and who couldn’t care less.

I love the approach of reviewing Trump’s life prior to his presidency. Haberman is a professional, reporting the facts and providing context from years of work. Unlike other books about Trump, she doesn’t weave her opinion of Trump throughout. Very credible work!

Story
Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.
