Plain Bad
Reviewed: 12-13-24
Other people have already complained about the narration, but on top of that the story is entirely lacking in charm and guile. There comes a point when it's time to stop a series or accept that if you continue it's going to be a poor simulacrum - this book represents that point in this series. Sorry to have to break it to you but what was a great run has ended. Don't bother with this one, it'll just make you sad to see once beloved characters treated this way.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

It's just too verbose. If you like long winded descriptions of everything, then sure, you may find this to your liking. For everyone else, I recommend skipping this book. At nearly two hours in the ceaseless descriptions have become too much.

Story
Exploring New Earth should be a thrilling undertaking. Instead, the more the colonists learn about the planet, the more alarmed they become. Alien ruins hint at a species who fought great wars among themselves and disappeared centuries ago. When Connor Gates discovers a hidden bunker, he finds something he never expected. Everything the colonists have learned about New Earth’s previous inhabitants is wrong. Connor must race to unravel the mystery. The colonists must face the possibility that they are not alone and that New Earth was never theirs for the taking.

I guess I was an optimist at heart. This book is where I draw the line. No more optimism, it just steadily declines, even when you think it can't get any worse. You'll most likely spend more time skipping painful dialog and formulaic scenes, than you will listening to this. Do yourself a solid and give up on this series. :(

Interesting premise, painful story telling
Reviewed: 08-10-24
Having listened to multiple books in this series, consider this a warning from future you. The premise is interesting but as the series progresses it just becomes more and more phoned-in. The dialog is often painful, attempts at character development lack nuance and subtlety, and the plot becomes formulaic. You can do better if you're looking for a new series to start.
