The story starts slow, but has a decent pacing and the characters are deep. Everybody seems real, and the world is extremely well described and portrayed.

The first as maybe the best book in the series. (Outside of the first one,) Heath Miller is a S tier Vocalist and deserves all the accolades. Without spoiling anything I have to say this is definitely the most roller coaster ride of a book in the series.

Things are not well within the Lodrak Empire. An entire city goes up in smoke and ash, and an entire province is slowly being consumed by an ever-expanding cloud of death. But while the humans rally to contain the fallout of this disaster, they are much quicker to pin the blame for it on their elven neighbors to the north. With the authorities fulfilling their responsibilities (for once), he looks forward to some quiet time to rest and recuperate. The locals might not find ceaseless monster onslaughts and an interdimensional invasion relaxing, but Jason has had a rough few years. He's doing his best to let go of his anger. While his team is caught up in duty, Jason has no shortage of people looking to interfere with his rest. Enemies—old and new—are circling, and even would-be allies are trouble.

This has been a crazy ride this far. (Waiting for more in hype.) I started this Audible series a while ago, and as one not often to write reviews felt it needed. This one had me in tears. It was slower and more character focused and I liked that, it is not a masterpiece but it is masterfully done and thought out.

This book is hands-down the most frustrating and sad rage inducing thing I have ever listen to. It’s worth it. You’ll hate yourself, you'll want to stop listening to it, but you won’t. The characters are shallow then deep then shallow again. I stand here unable to commit myself to the next book but I’m unable to listen to anything else because I want to know. You have been warned.

When I first started listening to this book, I was a bit put off it seemed a little odd and strange. But as a postal worker I have plenty of time to just powered through a book and I already spent money on it.
This book is undoubtedly one of my personal favorite now. It was well written the humor was amazing the character motivation pulled me and I felt personally connected to the main character and many other side characters.
This will be a ride for you when I recommend it highly.
