The book read like an ad for a cruise
Reviewed: 12-15-24
The book and MCs were flat. There were no surprises, how the story begins is exactly how I expected it to end. I didn't like the inane details of the cruise, the dinner menus, bar drinks, daily itineraries, the flash dance mob, etc. I listened to this because it is labeled as an "editor's pick" so disappointed, do not recommend.

Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Long and intense - worth the time
Reviewed: 12-08-24
I listed to this book. I could not stop. Very intense and vivid characters and would building. All the details matter, not something you can get distracted and not miss something important. I appreciate that - that the author didn't waste my time. My only disappointment is that the sequel isn't out yet! And it's not out for another 6 months 5/25. Also shout out to the voice actor -- superb!

For a young audience

I thought the first book was for a young adult. This is something for a young teen on tween. No spice - everyone lives and loves happily ever after. Would be a nice family read, especially if you're looking for queer characters and families.

Character intro/world building
Reviewed: 09-23-24
I thought the narration was really good. I had a really hard time keeping the characters straight. Because it's the first book in a series, I understand there is a rush build the scenes and intro characters, but I did have a hard time following. Not sure I will continue with the series, i think it is best for a young audience.

Entertaining, but not deep

I like the world building. I like the main characters love story. It was sweet (low spice). I didn't like how Oraya was portrayed as badass but with zero intuition or curiosity. The story was built on her simultaneously being very astute at sizing up bad guys and keeping herself alive, and completely blind of herself and the political situation. I found that frustrating. Reminded me of the Hunger Games. Overall I liked it, loved the narration. Will listen to book #2

Story
I’m not attracted to men.. Or so I thought before I slammed into Nikolai Sokolov.. A mafia heir, a notorious bastard, and a violent monster.. An ill-fated meeting puts me in his path. And just like that, he has his sights set on me. A quiet artist, a golden boy, and his enemy’s twin brother. He doesn’t seem to care that the odds are stacked against us. In fact, he sets out to break my steel-like control and blur my limits. I thought my biggest worry was being noticed by Nikolai. I’m learning the hard way that being wanted by this beautiful nightmare is much worse.

I read this series and listened to the last book on audible. The narrator really brought the story to life. I enjoyed this book the most. The series is good, you don't need to read the series to enjoy this book - but it helps to have the background info. The author does a good job of giving the reader the basics. I liked the series, but this one was my favorite.

A family friendly story the whole family will enjoy. We listened to this on a car trip and we enjoyed the story so much. As a parent, it was so spot on with the "teenager thinking". The historical elements, the setting in DC were meticulously researched; the story of new and lasting friendships and the missteps of families was so honest and real. It was a treat to experience with my kids ages 22-11. My one dig is with the narrator, she has a pronounced Canadian accent, seemed like an odd choice when everything else about the book was so - thoughtful.
