Story
If we were as tiny as ants to another being, what would they make of our philosophies? The great satirist Voltaire imagines alien visitors who have opinions. Bedtime stories are narrated by the world's most celebrated voices and written with no beginning, middle, or end so you don't stay up to hear what happens next. They're interesting enough to give your mind something to focus on, but delivered in a way that encourages sleep.

Strange but effective

Really weird story, and the narrator's pace is very slow. Puts me out every time. I've never made it to the end. Works for my kids, too!

Story
For most of us, the only thing we know about flies is that they're annoying, and our usual reaction is to try to kill them. In Super Fly, the myth-busting biologist Jonathan Balcombe shows the order Diptera in all of its diversity, illustrating the essential role that flies play in every ecosystem in the world as pollinators, waste-disposers, predators, and food source; and how flies continue to reshape our understanding of evolution.

Passed with fly-ing colors!

Excellent book on an often irritating order of insects. Really, everyone would benefit from this book. I'm a beekeeper, so naturally I'm more of a fan of bees and wasps, but flies are just as diverse and at times bizarre. Buy this now!
The author also does a great job with the narration.

Story
Every schoolchild learns about the mutually beneficial dance of honeybees and flowers: The bee collects nectar and pollen to make honey and, in the process, spreads the flowers' genes far and wide. In The Botany of Desire, Michael Pollan ingeniously demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a similarly reciprocal relationship.

Fascinating

Years ago I watched the documentary of the same name, and it was amazing. The book goes into much greater depth. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of some very small details about the plants he talks about. For instance, Pollan describes wild tulips as diminutive and star shaped, yet there are a few species which look similar to hybrid cultivar tulips. These are small details which have little consequence in the context of the greater message, and most people wouldn't be bothered by such things.

Useful information shrouded in boredom
Reviewed: 08-05-18
At first this book was incredibly boring. It follows the story of "Sarah" and her business "All About Pies". It's painfully dull. I get that "Sarah" is a useful tool for trying to emphasize the points Gerber is trying to make. When it comes to the information and insight into what makes a successful business, this book is gold. I highly recommend it, despite the lame "Sarah" story.

This has nothing to do with business. It would be fine as a beginner's guide. Misleading title.
