Perspective
Reviewed: 01-13-23
This book provides a perspective, while perhaps a bit over the top, that should never be forgotten and always considered for our own personal health and that of society.

Story
No one wants to overeat. And certainly no one wants to overeat for years, become overweight, and end up with a high risk of diabetes or heart disease--yet two thirds of Americans do precisely that. Even though we know better, we often eat too much. Why does our behavior betray our own intentions to be lean and healthy? The problem, argues obesity and neuroscience researcher Stephan J. Guyenet, is not necessarily a lack of willpower or an incorrect understanding of what to eat.

A scattered view of hunger
Reviewed: 09-01-18
The author has many ideas, but they aren’t proposed with any logic or overall understanding of the environment that contributes to obesity or hunger. There is such a lack of discussion about processed carbohydrates and insulin, it is as if he has a hostile contempt for insulin’s role in obesity.

Story
Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? Have sex? Smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour?

Comedy, now I get it.

Roach is as funny as that guy in 9th grade with the fart, vomit, fat, diarrhea jokes that were funny for about the first week of school, but then started getting old, and even a little offensive.
She does a good job of imitating a science journalist, without knowing the science. I'll have to admit, her writing at least gets me to not take things too seriously. Especially those things that are amazing and interesting, and as such a little too cherished and respected. Now that I finished it, I think I'll look for a read that I can respect and cherish.

Story
Contrary to conventional wisdom, chronic disease is not genetically predetermined but results from a mismatch between our genes and environment and lifestyle. What we call a "disease" is the outcome of an imbalance in one or more of the seven core physiological processes. Leveraging a lifetime on the cutting edge of research and practice, Dr. Jeffrey S. Bland lays out a road map for good health by helping us understand these processes and the root causes of chronic illness.

Not a thorough explanation of insulin. At least he recognized that calories aren't what matters. But he is mistaken with his fear of fat and cholesterol.

Story
Worry about cholesterol. Avoid red meat. Eat whole grains. Could it all be a lie? We live in an era of health hype and nutrition propaganda, and we are suffering for it. Decades of avoiding egg yolks, choosing margarine over butter, and replacing the real foods of our ancestors with low-fat, processed, packaged substitutes have left us with an obesity epidemic, ever-rising rates of chronic disease, and, above all, total confusion about what to eat and why.

Good Information

Paleo receives unwarranted criticism. This book, more than any I've read or listened to covers the latest understanding of our nutritional needs, and the real concerns with our food supply. It will help you let go of (with good reason and explanation) ingrained nutritional advice that was the result of poor science. There are many books doing a good job explaining this, but none as accessible with such humor and positive spirit.
