I tried to really enjoy this book as it reminded me Boxy T., but it fails to deliver on a couple things that it's just hard to overlook. This book is a slice of life tone but it doesn't come close. How supporting characters say and do wildly unrealistic things for literally no reason. How can a person be kidnapped and do a complete 180 on their attitude and THEN essentially runs right back to the person that kidnapped them. I may or may not continue this series unfortunately.

I like the fact that this book changes perspective so often. We don't have to listen to someone mash the "I win" button in every match. I also like that it still changes from past to present. There's still mysteries that remain from book 1 and I can't wait to hear them all concluded. Don't listen to the negative reviews of you're a true litrpg or progression reader/listener. This one is a surprisingly good one, considering it mashed together classes and cultivation with a ton of world building details comparing everything. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Story
When quiet Orrin and his extroverted best friend, Daniel, were transported to a strange RPG-based world, not much changed between them. Daniel became a hero of legend, while Orrin remained his unobtrusive shadow. Only when they faced a particularly lethal foe did Orrin step out of his comfort zone and display his true worth—with powers he didn't know he had. Of course, Daniel got all the glory, but Orrin doesn't mind. He's just happy they're both still alive.

Story
It would appear that, after two years of relative slacking, the Hero of Chaos is once again facing an ever-growing workload. Boxxy had been quite fortunate to obtain an exceptionally potent pawn with very little effort, but that was still effort it did not intend to expend. Sensing it might get dragged into things it really doesn't want to bother with, the creature makes haste to depart Velos and its orcs so that it may continue its private preparations for the upcoming Dragon Festival.

What an interesting listen...

For those of us who love litrpg, this one is a good one. It took about a third of the book to really get into it but once the progression really kicked in, I was hooked. The origin of the system is usually always asked and I really liked this authors take on it. The near seamless mix of old world technology mixed with new world magic was fascinating. I especially liked how our protagonist was still able to interact with magic. My biggest complaint is having to wait on book 2!

Story
When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere. Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway.

Reviewed: 01-09-24
All these other reviews critiquing Nick are just sad. He's one of the absolute best narrators I've ever heard and I've listened to 600+ audiobooks. The narrator trifecta of litrpg is Nick, Jeff Hays and Andrea Parsneau. That all being said, the class and skill names are square bracketed in the book. It's clear to hear that when they are said. If that bothers you, you probably haven't listened or read to many litrpg. This is one of the better isekai litrpg out there. Listen to it if you enjoy this genre. You won't be disappointed.
