This is a great follow-up to the last book and it expands upon the previous book in many ways. While I think the first was better overall from a fun standpoint, this one is better in terms of taking a more serious tone. It expains why the main character is the way he is in terms of his family, introduces real stakes for the characters, and creates tense situations with truly dangerous factions. The main driver of this story is the worldbuilding, especially the magic and the author does that wonderfully again.

While there was moment that pulled me out of the story and sounded preachy regarding calling a character "they" instead of "him" or "her". The author had a believable reason for someone being genderless since their god was though so it fit within the context of the world. Referring to the characters as "they" is super confusing though.

It was well plotted with an cool but underused magic system. The characters were more interesting toward the end of the book but not particularly compelling.

Good book but the first half got boring at times. The second half was better and ended interesting. It was very long which would be fine if there were self contained arcs but it just seemed to meander for long bits. I love this series and want it to continue and am looking forward to the next.

My main critique of this series (which I love) is that each book lacked a real ending the had a satisfying resolution. This had a truly epic climax and resolution with clearly defined stakes that kept the tension high throughout. This book is the best in the series so far and I look forward to more. If he keeps writing them I'll keep buying them.

Also would like to see some serious character arcs that bring about change in the character beyond the external. Some doubts or fears that he needs to overcome.

This was pretty good, but not as good as his earliest books in the series. One thing the author doesn't do that I wish he did was make endings that are plotted well throughout each book. The characters are good but could use character arcs. The setting is excellent. Regardless, this series is like candy, it's like a treat to listen to. I love the RPG aspect to it and the main character's interactions in the world.

Didn't like the weird, out of place scene with the giant dream guy. It took me out of the story and the unnecessary torture scene doesn't fit with the rest of the books.

What an excellent book. The characters were so distinct, even in their humor which was amazing. A hard magic approach to the world was intriguing as was the main character's draw back (clever move the author giving him that attunement). People who love video games and manga will feel crazy amounts of nostalgia for this homage to that style of story telling. The book keeps you interested the whole way through.

The things I didnt like are minor but this is a review, so I'll mention them. For a story without really any romance the one very minor romance arc didnt fit and didnt make sense, by 17 people know how they feel. The other thing I didnt like were a few things at the end that were there that felt forced and the explanations didnt fit. That's not to say the ending was full of this, no, the ending was very well done with a sequence that really worked, just a certain character and a certain creature were a bit too much.

This is not as good as other David Gemmell's other books like Legend and King Beyond the Gate and Waylander in my opinion.

Gemmell is a master of tragic, flawed heroes who are part hero, part villain (at some point in their lives). This book contains so many small things that a person would recognize in real life that prove Gemmell had a grasp of how the personal struggles of real people determine their decisions.
