Story
Kara Goucher grew up with Olympic dreams. She excelled at running from a young age and was offered a Nike sponsorship deal when she graduated from college. Then in 2004, she was invited to join a secretive, lavishly funded new team, dubbed the Nike Oregon Project. Coached by distance running legend Alberto Salazar, it seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime. Kara was soon winning a World Championship medal, going to the Olympics, and standing on the podium at the New York and Boston marathons, just like her coach. But behind the scenes, Salazar was hiding dark secrets.

Grit and Integrity
Reviewed: 03-18-23
I'm just finished Kara Goucher's amazing book, The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team. I have always admired Kara's grit on the track and the road. But here, she reveals how that grit and integrity shows up in the rest of her life.
Read this book. It will break your heart. It will have you nodding in recognition. Sometimes it feels like a slow-motion train wreck. But you will be cheering at the end.
Well done, Kara. We love you.

Story
Running saved Alison Désir’s life. At rock bottom and searching for meaning and structure, Désir started marathon training, finding that it vastly improved both her physical and mental health. Yet as she became involved in the community and learned its history, she realized that the sport was largely built with white people in mind. Running While Black draws on Désir’s experience as an athlete, activist, and mental health advocate to explore why the seemingly simple, human act of long distance running for exercise and health has never been truly open to Black people.

It hurt, and I'm grateful
Reviewed: 11-05-22
Alison Désir tells a beautiful, horrible story that needs to be heard. As a fellow runner, I laughed in empathy at her stories of running. I cried as I listened to the story of her run from Harlem to Washington, D.C. I was offended by her insistence on using the term white supremacy. I wanted to shout, "But I'm a good guy!" Eventually, I surrendered as she methodically told the story. Like an expert prosecutor, she presents the evidence: the historical erasure of black contributions to distance running, ignoring the accomplishments of current runners of color, and heat map data that clearly shows runners avoiding black and brown neighborhoods. In the end, she provides clear calls to action. It hurt to listen to Alison tell this story. But if the story does not sting at least a little, nothing will change. Thank you, Alison.

Story
Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible.

Ronsley changed my life
Reviewed: 11-14-20
I bought Amplify a few years ago. I read it, highlighted a few passages and set it aside. But it kept working on me. I got to know Ronsley through the We Are Podcast community. I went back and reread the book. I got more out of it. The lessons kept cropping up. Recently, I listened to the Audible version. As Ronsley will tell you, there is something intimate and compelling about audio. I downloaded the worksheets and worked through them. My life and business are experiencing a significant shift because of Ronsley, the Amplify book, and the community he has built. Read this book at your own peril. You never know where the path will lead you.

Story
In 2015, Arlan Hamilton was on food stamps and sleeping on the floor of the San Francisco airport, with nothing but an old laptop and a dream of breaking into the venture capital business. She couldn’t understand why people starting companies all looked the same (white and male), and she wanted the chance to invest in the ideas and people who didn’t conform to this image of how a founder is supposed to look. Hamilton had no contacts or network in Silicon Valley, no background in finance - not even a college degree. What she did have was fierce determination and the will to succeed.

If you experience depression or anxiety (and given the state of our society, who isn't?) this is the book for you. It has completely flipped how I think about anxiety and depression. This is my third time through this lovely book, and every time I come away with new insights. The points are well researched. The stories are illuminating. Read the book, then go see a friend and talk about it.

Story
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

Petulant adults. Bigotry. Antisemitism. Colorfully described in Hemingway's tight prose. The characters are flawed and well drawn. Buy most impressive is William Hurt's reading. I don't think I will be able to read Hemingway again without hearing Hurt's excellent narration.
