Story
Dominic Hart was screwed. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, no money for treatment, and an athletic scholarship hanging by a thread...he didn't have many options. But the university clinic had offered him a free video game. Some sort of "therapy", they said. A way to while away the hours until he kicked the bucket. Yay. What Dom wasn't expecting was to get swindled by a surly casino owner right out of the gate. Or get dropped in a backwater hellhole voted the “number one worst starting location in Awaken Online".

I tried really hard to like these books
Reviewed: 10-14-22
The writing and story get really repetitive really fast.
The narrator is incredibly hard to listen to and stay involved with.
Some better editing choices and a different narrator would have gone a long way towards making this series enjoyable. As it stands, if your looking for something to listen to for a good night sleep…

Starts off very slow but then becomes mildly interesting. Struggled thru it and was curious enough to try the second in the series. Overall not that impressed with any of the audio book experience. Finishing the second book is a trial. Wishing I had given it a pass. Will not be continuing on.

At 30 years old, Phil is an unemployed gamer who struggles to make ends meet. His only source of income is freelance writing (when he feels inspired enough to add another article to his less-than-popular blog). His wife has just walked out on him, leaving him without money, purpose, or food in the fridge. On the day his wife dumps him, Phil receives a mysterious piece of wetware. A game interface seems to have been implanted in his brain, which allows him to see the world through the eyes of an RPG player. Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

Glad I picked this one up on sale! The beginning starts out painfully slow. But sticking it out and keeping with it was not a disappointment. Not completely.... Despite the dry narration and slow opening plot both the story and telling become markedly better building into an edge of your seat nail biting can't wait to hear happens next. Until the end. Which really is no end. Which I personally hate. Ultimately this title left me feeling like a waste of time and money.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Story
Only a handful of people in the world know that mankind's magic comes from a living creature, and it is a refugee from another universe. The Power showed up here in the 1850s because it was running from something. Now it is 1933, and the Power's hiding place has been discovered by a killer. It is a predator that eats magic and leaves destroyed worlds in its wake. Earth is next. Former private eye Jake Sullivan knows the score. The problem is, hardly anyone believes him.
