This book feels like filler...Worst in the series.
Reviewed: 09-08-24
To start I enjoy this series overall and like seeing the characters grow.
However this entire book just barely covers them finishing Minkalla.
*Kinda Spoiler*
We start back in with them half way through Minkalla and the book ends with then exiting....that's it, we don't get any after the fact stuff on them or anything.
You get an hour and a half after their exit focusing on a bunch of other bs sub stories for nobody character's.
The vert end sees us with the nobles discussing which is fine but everything before was worthless.
Not to mention the continued jumps to random other character's during their travel through Minkalla.
Without explaining too much their is a trial where our main team lives out 2 different lives as it's test and you are forced to listen to all of that nothing for about 3 and a half hours.
Then for other trials instead of talking about the start and end of the challenges they focus on the easy starts for 40min then basically give no info on the ends of the trials.
Huh....I enjoy the series but this book was sooooo un focused, narrowing in on useless people and temporary info.
They barely advanced a story and made the fact that I waited for this book feel like a waste of my time and money.
I genuinely believe you can skip this entire book and just wait for the next one in the series.
They will actually cover their exiting Minkalla and go over all the relevant info with their manager teams.

It's getting worse
Reviewed: 08-13-23
I've liked the series but the longer it goes the worse it gets.
First I hate how it acts like some hormonal teen trash every time we meet new female characters and Jay has to intimately describe them in some weird sexual way.
The amount of characters in the story is huge and now they are jumping around every other chapter spending 3 hours telling us about a bunch of side stuff.
Yes it's all apart of a whole and yes some of it can be interesting but spending hours on not the main characters POV is tiring.
Let's also talk about the idiotic fact that during any fight or siege or whatever that mid assault Jay and the Team all stop doing anything and just shit talk and argue over nothing while their team is fighting and dying.
Every second they get they have to have some female character playing the "bitch" role and loosing it over someone breathing.
You can develop characters without having them spazz then talk for 10 sec and storm off.
Jay keeps going on about "Everyone doesn't get how we can fight like we do, it's all in fun and blah blah blah" yet every argument has someone with hurt feelings who doesn't learn a lesson.
I know I'm saying alot of negatives but this is built up over books over and over.
It feels worse because sometimes I love the character development, like Helgoth, Delmare and many people of the world feel like they are growing and changing meanwhile all of these grown adults are constantly having mood swings and throwing temper tantrums over nothing repeatedly.
I like some of the references to gaming culture but it feels so over used sometimes but not all the time.
Sometimes it does just feel like some friends goofing while on their long walk in game.
Then someone spazzes again...and Jay narrates to himself acting like some damn psychologist in his head while he addresses 0 actual issues to try and get past the conflicts.
Again I'm here this late in the series so obviously I like it enough, although I'm just getting back to the series after dropping it for a year so take that with a grain of salt.
I didn't put any specifics because of spoilers and also I'm actually on the next book but am having a hard time finishing it so came back one to write the review. 😅
I could for sure say more but honestly that's more effort then it's worth, I'll say if your enjoying them keep going and if you are struggling to get through them then stop now and move on from the series.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

I should clarify this is my second listen through the series and I loved it.
But I forgot how B**chy and nasty Alice was in the being of the series.
I hated hearing her speak in the beginning but that's her writing, if that's your problem please know her character goes through alot of development and doesn't stay like that.
great series and if your thinking about it stop and get it.

Jason and Dawn magically got it on...nice.
Haha, good for him though although she's gonna disappear for a while.
Though I guess to God adjacent beings 10 or so years is nothing.
I never even thought about how physicality becomes irrelevant and magical becomes much more so.

Story
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

I don't by any means think it is the best series, in it's writing or story but it's fun with fun characters.
I enjoy this series so much,
I'm in a low point right now and struggling with a lot but this series has helped me laugh.
laugh because of the absurdity of he who does his best to be the him he wants to be even though he's struggling.
At many points I'd find myself understanding him, of course my problems aren't magical with astral beings trying to smash me under foot but they all feel world ending....things that break me down and everything around me but I see him deal with it and keep being that recklessly charming magical space wizard.
I just end up giggling to myself a lot or worse, laughing out loud in public makes you look insane btw.
Anyway it's a series that I genuinely enjoy and if you like this book then keep going.

So the author has a base for their story but decides to toss in so much other stuff to try and make it more complicated. You can have intrigue and mystery without so much information, I think they just need to focus on a few aspects and twist those up not randomly toss in new people and immediately make twist and turns for the character.
The references to how "Everyone is bad, everyone is a murderer who will do evil things" but based on his story alone it's not so black and white, he was forced by the majority to crawl through a hole that everyone thought would kill him.
They also set up how their like 20 something people is a large settlement and separate into factions, it makes sense because even 1 immortal being is a force in itself but then after establishing these factions they immediately kill their follower off permanently.
The book isn't awful and I think they have a goal with the story I just think they need a lil more focus, Narrow it down to a main goal and a 2-3 sides and work on those not toss more in.

We're going across the seas, to pursue the enemy in their homes and to hit them hard before they have another chance to strike. But when we arrive, we find there's more to this enemy than anticipated. I must rely upon my dark powers if I want to stand a chance of defeating them, to the point that I just might lose myself. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. Listen in if you enjoy detailed harem elements, blood, and a hero who teeters on the edge of good and evil. It's all about perspective, isn't it?

The sex scenes are very tiring, like I just skip the chapter when it's starts because they run like 10 min but every fight last a min.
Also stop giving them guides or soldiers, they get all of them killed in the 60sec fight scenes.
It's better then others I've read though and it's free with it so.

Starts the story by flipping everything else upside down, Constantly forgets his own abilities and doesn't use them and changes stuff like it never happened. This series seems like it had nobody looking over it to check for the absurdly large amount of inconsistencies. Like hello STEVE I thought you were ken but oh well, man has given quests before and hello but you've had the god power stuff explained to you before. The author leaves Jason in the dark about all the stuff happening and then forgets the few things he actually knows This could be made better if the author just kept notes of his own story and had someone look it over. It seems more like a story a highschool kid through together for fun and added to every year without going back to look at the story. I try to be fair and I love the narrator but the amount that this story looses itself and has me yelling about it is absurd. I give the series so far a 2 only because of Michael David Axtell, the man carries it and has kept me listening. Honestly I hope if any other books come out that the other stops and listens to them all himself first. Also one last thing is I grinds my gears how he says m.o.b I know it's not his fault he probably has zero idea but huh... Anyway if you made it to looking at this review might as well just go for it and listen.

The amount of times that they say something or bring up a topic just to forget about it in the next sentence and be surprised to learn about it is ridiculous. "I'm going to use Captain suit's so I can be a captain" then they are surprised by it "what do you mean 2 captains? she's a captain...wow this is unexpected" like what the author forgets what they wrote. I don't hate it but the story shoves these universe level ideas but then goes back "you need to build some more long houses" please if they properly built up to higher levels of danger and concepts it would be fine but instead your flung around to fighting gods of the universe's to talking about building in a lil village.
