Story
A fascinating tour of creatures from the surface to the deepest ocean floor: How Far the Light Reaches invites us to envision wilder, grander, and more abundant possibilities for the way we live. Conservation journalist Sabrina Imbler discovers that some of the most radical models of family, community, and care can be found in the sea, from gelatinous chains that are both individual organisms and colonies of clones to deep-sea crabs that have no need for the sun, nourished instead by the chemicals and heat throbbing from the core of the Earth.

More sea creatures!
Reviewed: 02-27-23
I was more interested in the stories about the sea creatures than with the author's evolving love life. I expected some and am not at all put off by GLBTQ? topic....but this balance tipped the other way. At least early in the reading and I got impatient with where it was going.

repetition is overdone style
Reviewed: 12-06-22
started strong. I enjoyed the first chapter a lot. The repetition as a style of writing was way overdone. I got impatient with it. The final chapters regarding aging and nursing home was painful. a lot of accuracy in it but really painful to listen to. In general. I did not enjoy this book

But then the gallery is raided the day before the opening, and the photos seized with surprising violence. It soon becomes clear that someone, somewhere, wants to keep the images hidden. Who? Why? And who - in a world where kidnap, subterfuge and even murder are the norm, and where no one is safe or above suspicion - can Andrew turn to for help?

Misleading

This book was hugely disappointing. I was expecting, from the summary, that the photos...the faces ...would be much more the crux of the plot. It was superficial re. the missing young. None of the other faces created a story thread. Could have been more drama about those lives who insected with tragedy or misfortune in some way. Some surprising connections between one or three or.... Personalities were ok. Nothing insightful or unique. Trite . I finished it but would not recommend it at all.

Story
No discussion of great modern authors is complete without mention of Cormac McCarthy, whose rare and blazing talent makes his every work a true literary event. A grand addition to the American literary canon, Suttree introduces readers to Cornelius Suttree, a man who abandons his affluent family to live among a dissolute array of vagabonds along the Tennessee river.

I have greatly enjoyed other of McCarthy's books. And true to form his characters and descriptions put the reader right there. However.....he could have pared about a fourth of this book. Redundant. Enough of the layer upon layer of adjectives. No new information nor insights added with yet another brawl or drinking or sexing. I got through it but it was slogging.
