Some of the plot was contrived.

My biggest issues is just too many plot devices just fell into place, and I could have written the ending almost word for word 2/3rd of the way thru. It did hold my interest for the most part even with the eyeroll parts.

I'm done
Reviewed: 09-28-23
I am in no way a prude, but the constant sexual angst just takes me out of the story. I had planned to stop with Witch With no Name as it was the original ending to the series, I honestly struggled to get to the end of that. This book came up on a sale so I thought I'd see what might be different over the years. I had thought with the original series I liked the worldbuilding, liked most of the secondary characters but just hated Rachel Morgan. I cringed at every single action scene with Rachel lusting after all the fighters rather than freaken fight for her life. I get that vamps control people with pheromones and whatnot, but it's just so awkward, shoehorning the sex vibes in and Rachel does it even when not under vamp vibes, I mean, at more than one point she lust after Jenks. I did make it to the end of the book, with tons of eyerolls, I think the sex angst actually got a bit better in the last half but I'm just done with this series.

I think there might have been an interesting story in here somewhere but the constant angst of Charlie and Lincoln is just too irritating to continue the series.

OK, while I'm "woke" as hell, {can we shut up with the woke as an insult already? Do better people} the political stuff bothers me NOT at all. My issues, is the writing seems really sloppy. We're getting a ton of awkward exposition, the characters are acting out of characters and while they are saying "oh wow, this is out of character for us" I'm not feeling it at all. And why in the heck would mother earth make the arbitrary limitation of the task just being Stacia and Declan and them not accessing any of their physical support, like money. I can't decide if I can go further. Some of this is just cringe. I'm also REALLY not a fan of flashback style stories.

While I would not search out Alison Larkin to listen to, I am becoming more used to the tone of her voice.

I generally like Julia Quinn as a writer. This one just wasn't good. After a promising start, both leads became very unlikable. Turner turned into a jerk. His last minute epiphany was weak at best. Amanda was a doormat. Every time it looked like she might get a backbone it just faded away.
Jenny Sterlin did a very good job narrating.
