About this listen

This boxed set contains the first three books in C. J. Archer's popular Ministry of Curiosities series. Titles in the set include:

  1. The Last Necromancer
  2. Her Majesty's Necromancer
  3. Beyond the Grave

Description of The Last Necromancer:

For five years, Charlotte (Charlie) Holloway has lived as a boy in the slums. But when one theft too many gets her arrested, her only means of escape lies with a dead man. Charlie hasn't raised a spirit since she first discovered she could do so five years ago. That time, her father banished her. This time, she brings even more trouble upon herself.

People are now hunting Charlie all over London, but only one man succeeds in capturing her.

Lincoln Fitzroy is the mysterious head of a secret organization on the trail of a madman who needs a necromancer to control his newly made creatures. There was only one known necromancer in the world - Charlotte - but now there appears to be two. Lincoln captures the willful Charlie in the hopes the boy will lead him to Charlotte. But what happens when he discovers the boy is in fact the young woman he's been searching for all along? And will she agree to work for the man who held her against her will, and for an organization she doesn't trust?

Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they're hunting.

Starts off great

The narrator is superb, producer also did a great job. First book was exciting and different. Character was a scrappy young woman who was forced to live on the London streets in the late 1800’s as a boy to survive. As the books progressed the scrappy , determined young woman becomes a young woman scared to make a decision in case she offends the man that she now cares and works for. The interesting young woman that was such a force turned into someone else. You might enjoy these types of books , I’m not much of a fan

Excellent Purchase 3 books in 1

Wasn't sure I would like reading about a necromancer but this series has been a nice easy read, I think this series would be appropriate for a young adult and has been a good listen during my morning walks.

Great concepts, interesting characters

other than the street urchin accent, the performance was great. The story, some will love and some will hate. I think it is very good in regards to Etiquette for the time period. If you don't understand the time period, you won't like some parts and why he does certain things. Overall, I liked it which is bad because there are 7 more books to go! And that's a hard on the pocketbook!

Spoiler

Review on "Beyond the Grave"
Charlie's really starting to annoy me. She will not listen and does whatever she wants and does not think of the consequence.
But i guess getting a reaction like annoy makes this book good.

Fabulous historical fantasy

I loved these three books. Especially for lovers of the Victorian era, fantasy, suspense and romance. Exciting and well written.

I Loved this Boxed Set Audiobook; More please.

After finishing this three book boxed set by C. J. Archer, I am totally a new fan of this author and can hardly wait to begin book four in this series. 5☆'s

Narrator Shiromi Arseio's has a pleasant voice and for most of this aidiobook I could tell which chacter she was reading. However, from about half way through this set, her voice changes failed me and I could not tell which character she was narrating. For this reason I had to re-listen to chapters and try to figure it out. This of course is why my overall score for this very well written series could not be five stars. 4☆'s

Well Written and Great Slow Burn

I am new to books by C.J. Archer, but not to historical fantasy/romance as a genre. This is probably one of the best slow burn dynamics I have encountered. Archer does a great job of building tension and intrigue without utilizing a huge variety of settings and props. Much of the books take place within the home of the protagonists but the story still manages to be complex and interesting with answers given and loose ends tied. Just the right amount of danger and adventure. Even my partner found himself drawn in while I was listening. I will definitely be listening to the rest of the series and others by C.J. Archer. It is a huge relief to find another lengthy historical fantasy series that is not a cookie cutter approach.

The narrator is pretty good though her male voices are sometimes difficult to distinguish, but overall I have not been taken out of the story very many times from being confused about who is speaking. I also feel like her voice is perfectly suited to voicing the thoughts of the heroine, Charlie. Since the story is told from her perspective, I think the narrator is an appropriate choice for this series.

Note: The series is categorized as historical and fantasy genre but not romance. I was a little concerned about this as I love a little bit of romance in my books. It is not a romance series, but there is an aspect of romance woven within the main story arcs for those of us who like that stuff. Would highly recommend to those looking for a romantic storyline or those who prefer the plot to focus on mystery and fantasy.

I’m hooked, to my surprise!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this boxed set because it is a great launch into the rest of Charlie and Lincoln’s story at a great price for three whole books.

What other book might you compare The Ministry of Curiosities Boxed Set to and why?

This is a period supernatural fantasy set during a favorite period of English history and it combines suspense, romance and mystery with engaging characters as do the books of Laurie R. King, Elizabeth Peters and Deanna Rayburn among others.

What three words best describe Shiromi Arserio’s voice?

Ms. Arserio has a very pleasant voice, easy to listen to, and her English accents are believable. However I don’t feel she is as skilled at other nationalities and her range isn’t broad enough for the range of men’s voices as I would like.

Any additional comments?

Perhaps if I were younger or if I hadn’t listened to all three books one after the other, I wouldn’t have grown impatient with Charlie and Lincoln’s drama. I had to remind myself repeatedly that Charlie is very young and both characters have been emotionally handicapped by their unconventional childhoods. It also helped to remember that all three books occur over the course of only a few months. I was sympathetic but I got tired of Charlie describing herself as “pathetic” and of Lincoln’s confused stubbornness. Still, I’m hooked and want to see these two continue to grow in their selves and their relationship.
