Helen wrote out so much. Not only the objective facts of her abuse but also the intricate thoughts and feelings behind her situation. The story is a well of validation for not only the victims of physical abuse but the victims of coercive control. I remember thinking, "I wish he'd just hit me so I'd have a real excuse to leave." Physical abuse is not the only kind of domestic abuse.

Took awhile to grab my attention but the beginning was necessary to establish a true understanding of how the author fell so in love and ignored or misinterpreted red flags.

A carefully and thoughtfully worded account of Megan's thoughts and feelings about her life in this church. The dichotomy of love and pain surrounding family and faith was hard to listen to at times but left few lines of questioning untouched. A must listen for fans of cult survival or theology.

Some reviews called this messy, disorganized, and selfish. While I can see why some might be put off by the nonchronological order of the book, it made perfect sense to me to categorize the impacts of addiction and recovery by the areas of life and relationships rather than by the years. The language used to describe the addiction was familiar to me and something that felt good to hear from someone else. I've been sober for 4 years now without a 12 step community so it felt nice to listen to another addict. Maybe it's time to find an MA meeting.

Great narrative performance about the struggles of addiction, family, and relationships. More memoirs like this need to get out there and address the stigma around addiction and mental health.

4 stars only to highlight the amazing narrative performance. The monstrous range of Travis Baldree brings the story to life and captivated my attention. I enjoyed the story and it moved along at a comfortable pace, very few lulls. The magical mechanics were interesting and vague enough to allow a bit of "rule bending" Loved it, will probably listen again in a few years when I forget what happens.

I'm usually skeptical of authors narrating their own books, but this was a great performance. The story itself was just delightful and cozy like your dnd character finally gave retirement a go and fell in love.
