Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

I loved this book when I read it a few years ago, but listening to it admirably rendered by Zach Appelman, I was able to appreciate to the full the beauty of Anthony Doerr's poetic prose. This book of his alone should win him the Nobel prize, although his perfectly crafted and highly original collections of short stories are just as fine. A wonderful writer.
The narration was almost perfect. I just wish that Appelman had worked harder on hi

But the truth is soon uncovered: Léon is a girl named Léonie and is actually the legitimate child of the Comte and his wife. While Avon is intent on his plan to reveal the Comte’s duplicity and ruin him, he is charmed by Léonie’s kindness, falls in love, and becomes a changed man.

Georgette Heyer always lifts my spirits. I return to her time after time. This novel is superbly plotted and full of engaging characters, with its heroine becoming every reader's or listener's favourite. Sarah Nichol's excellent French accent, and her ability to bring each character's accent and personality out, made this Audible version a veritable gem.

She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

Story
A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

This sustained, authentic performance has been a complete pleasure to listen to. Ms Syal has been able to find an individual voice for each of the myriad characters. She has performed this enormous masterpiece beautifully and most faithfully. I hope she will take on Nicholas Nickleby and Great Expectations. She understands Charles Dickens. I cannot pay her a greater compliment. Her reading of the Afterword in place of a Preface was incredibly moving.

Story
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Listening to Juliet Stevenson read Middlemarch was an absolute pleasure. She read this lengthy, great, novel perfectly. It was like attending a dramatised version of the novel, because she gave each of the characters a special voice and tempo. How very gifted she is. I think George Eliot would love her interpretation. Thank you, Juliet, and thank you, Audible.
