About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

With an introduction written and read by Katie Fforde.

Hero Wantage is desperate to change her fate.

When the dashing Lord Sherry proposes out of the blue, Hero is overjoyed—she'll escape a life as a governess and, once they wed, he can finally claim his inheritance.

But as Hero attempts to social climb in glamorous London society, Sherry is concerned that her naivety will ruin them both and takes drastic action.

The chaos that follows will push friendships—and hearts—to breaking point.

I had read the book, but was not as appreciative of the story and characters as I was listening to the audio. Completely wonderful.

Outstanding

SPOILER

I thought the narrator was excellent. His ability to give life to dialog was what made this book so satisfactory. I dislike immensely when a swindler appears on the scene and despite warnings gets his mark in his crosshairs. Overall this story was very very humorous. The genius of capturing the fascinating thieves cant is one of my absolute fav part of Heyer’s books. The secondary characters are undoubtedly a strength. Recommend this book. Loved the plotting.

Ivory turners and card sharps my least favorite.

So witty. Every character is engaging. Heyer’s quality of writing is so very rare. The narrator imbued a wonderful story with a soupcon of hilarity a la PG Wodehouse.

Best narrator ever

You don't read this book for any edification of mind - it is purely fun. I suppose there are a few interesting historical details but they are scant or scattered. But from Chapter 21 on, it keeps you in a bubble of laughter and that's well worth it imo.
Also, having it read to me, gave me a different perspective and I didn't find it as superficial as I previously did, (which is to say, I previously found it entirely superficial and often quite tedious in sections - I felt most of the characters were extremely immature, which they are of course - being a predominantly young and privileged cast [I suppose I used to contrast this with my own depth of maturity and experience at that age] - but now, with distance, I find I am more entertained by the ludicrousness of this plot and characters.
The narration was very good and even though there were several passages I would have read differently, the different approach gave me a slightly different perspective and that can only be a good thing when one has read a book several times

so much fun!

Great narration. His characterizations brought the story to life. Found myself smiling and loving the group of friends who were captivated by the innocent new
wife and how they protected her .

Light-hearted, fun characters.

One of Georgette Heyer’s most delightful Regency romances. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The voices were very well performed.

The conversations between the young ton men especially Ferdie!

The narrator was amazing and the characters were so fun! A book I will listen to over and over again.

Delightful!

A regular romp, an enjoyable read on the whole, however there are serveral things that I was suprised or frustrated with.
I am not a fan of simpering misses who flirt with one man to make another man jealous nor females that get offened when the man they profess to love gets frustrated with them for blowing hot and cold and thus goes off to leave her to stew in her own mess.
Secondly, I HATE when so called friends withhold vital information from a friend for extended periods of time even though they can see it is hurting there friends simply to teach them a lesson or prove a point.
Lastly, Kitten is forever getting into "scrapes" for following Sherry's example in the hopes to please him, when she does this and upsets him for whatever reason he "boxes her ears" and with his friends standing in approvale no less!!! I acknowledge that this behaviour is accurate to the period, but haveing been the victim of domestic violence it is hard to read how exceptable it has been in the not so distant past.

There were so many twistes and turns in this plot leaving me surpised at every corner, not a common thing for me; but due to the issues mentioned above not a book I initially would be likely to recommend to someone. However, I have taken the time to read it a second time after several months upon remembering that more often than not Heyer tells her stories as the development of the "Hero", flaws and all (something I highly praise Heyer for, she does not make perfect people but shows raw people with all there imperfections). This fact should not be surprising since her brother, father, and later her husband where the audience she was writting for and who were critiquing her work. In such a light, this book has been brought from a 3 star rating to a 5 star rating although I dislike the methods used in the book I can see the credibility of it while enjoying the rediculous antics that vibrantly show Heyers unique sense of humor.

Thank you Owen Findlay for bringing these wonderfully amusing characters to life, and for giving your expressive voice to the narration. One of the funniest Heyer romances in a superb performancs.

Sparkling narration!

Friday’s Child is different from Heyer’s other books, in that the main characters marry early in the book, but only realize their love is mutual throughout their own growth through the book. It is a very beautiful, compelling read. My suggestion, for this particular narrator, is to listen at less than 1.0x speed, as the narrator is rather clipped and rapid in his speech, yet the nuance and beauty of the words really comes out when read more slowly. Typically, I listen to Heyer’s books at greater than 1.0x speed. But this book and telling of it is worth savoring at a slower pace. Highly recommend this audible version. Had the previous one, and like this narrator much better. Enjoy!

Perhaps Heyer’s best/ but different
