Many years and even more levels have passed since Jake and friends entered Nevermore. With quite a number of floors passed, they turn their attention to the Challenge Dungeons. These Challenge Dungeons offer – as the name suggests – unique challenges and circumstances, and completing them will earn each Nevermore competitor points and multipliers to their existing points. As things unfold, it quickly becomes clear it’s through these dungeons that the true top-scorer of the Nevermore Leaderboards will be found.

it's a nice story. I really enjoyed it, I will say there was some times where the back story of the main characters human life did not really match up well with his new life. I did not mark down the exact lines that highlighted that but basically there were times when he would make a comment about how he did not know something and a CIA assassin would absolutely know that thing, stuff like that.
I'd did not take away form the overall story just wasn't consistent with the back story we were given.
still I enjoyed this a great deal and really want at least 5 or 6 more books in this series.

the only thing that pisses me off about this story is I am starting it when there is only one book out. I thought I was starting a series that had a bunch of books out and now I have to wait for more. gaaaahhhhh so sick of having to wait for authors to write. I wish I could chain them to a desk with a laptop. 0.o

Story
So it turns out overthrowing a 14,000-year-old cultivation empire is going to take longer than I expected, but I've made a great start. I've broken through to the Core Realm of my hidden Berserker art, established a new Terran Sect, and even discovered a tribe of lost Terrans out in the wild. There's a whole lot more at stake and even more people to save, but that's all the more reason to free the Earth from the empire's control. Not everyone is thrilled about my progression, however.

I wanted to give this one a second book. I said I'd even give it three because I really like cultivation stories, but I can't see myself listening to more from this series.
the good is the setting. the world is interesting and I like the concept and the reason for the conflict. I also like a decent amount of the characters.
I can't get around the pacing and powers. I also do not like the two different styles of cultivation in this story. it has heavy plot armor that doesn't just make the MC overpowered, because I can and do like a OP character from time to time, it's the way it's executed. it's more comic book hulk then cultivation in most cases. the MC just finds more anger and hulks out then wins. I dunno it's just not want I want.
I also do not like the ways a lot of powers in the book work, and find him cultivating lemonade really tiering. Like the character is always cool because he has a power that lets him be cool all the time. meh.
the narrator is actually pretty good, it help ls the book a lot. he does the action really well. my only issue is that his female character voices are kinda terrible. if this voice actor worked with a female partner on a naration team it would be pretty amazing.
anyways there is a lot more I did not like about the book. I did force myself to finish it but I won't be listing to anymore. I found myself just not interested in the story towards the last 4 or 5 hours of book.

Story
When the cultivators came to Earth, they destroyed our entire civilization in a matter of hours. Armies fell, cities burned, and that was before the moon turned red and filled our world with monsters. Now, over a decade later, what's left of humanity slaves under the heels of our Qi-infused masters. The luckiest of us might even become one of them, they say—if we serve the Dynasty well enough and harness the power of Qi. But I want none of that. I'm sick of serving, and I want nothing to do with their world. Instead, I want them to pay for what they did to mine.

So I want to start this review by saying overall I liked the book. The overall story was good and compelling. The characters were interesting and the direction of the story kept me listening to it. I did have at least one major issue that made me want to quit the book at least a dozen times however.
The first is the description of one of the flavors of emotion he is able to cultivate. I think it is admiration but after the first description of it at the beginning of the where the main character says it tastes like lemonade that's all you get for the rest of the book. Every other time the character cultivates that emotion he just says they tossed him some lemonade. It was very annoying and distracting. Mostly because it took me out of the scene every time it was mentioned. All the other emotions that are talked about the author does not use a food flavor to describe it like this. When the main character is channeling fear or rage they simply say fear or rage. So when this one is swapped instead of saying admiration or respect I don't have a clue. I do know that for me at least it was really distracting and I cringed and wanted to quit the book instead of finishing it.
This book is also clearly a power fantasy book as the main character is just way more powerful then anyone else at his respective power in the book. I don't hate that, for context I really enjoy Primal Hunter, Defiance of the fall, and He who fights with monsters, but you should know before going in. Some of the books I really like have that but generally do a slightly better job of having peers around them that can at lest compete or challenge the main character. Throughout the book because of the powers that were shown, I never really thought the main character was at risk of actually losing to anyone they fought.
Lastly I want to warn people that the Narrator is not the best. He does fine for the fight scenes and voicing the main character but whenever he has to do a female voice it sounds like a parody of a female or a old lady and nothing in-between. Its really hard for me to listen too. All of the other male voices were also not great it sounds like he was trying really really hard to make them sound different but they all just sounded kind of like a joke, some more then others.
Look the narrator wasn't bad but this story would have been a lot better with a different voice actor or if this voice actor worked with a partner or two especially with a female partner. If the author decided to edit the book or make some changes going forward it would be a much better story. I will be listening to the next book and ill try the third because I don't expect changes to the second book as its already in the works at the time of me posting this review. However if the third book keeps doing the same stuff and the narration stays the same I wont continue the series. Take that how you will.

I'll buy anything written by pirateaba and performed by Andrea Parsneau. The wondering inn is one of my favorite stories of all time. I'm not sure why people had a issue with this story on readit. the only thing I can point too is that if this story took place in a bunch of chapters in between the other varied and amazing characters of that story it might have been harder maybe?
Ether way I think it fits right in and the characters are just as good as always. I wanted to strangle the main character as much as root for them. I also think it's amazing that Pirateaba is able to get me to tear up in every major battle she writes it's amazing. I read alot of fantasy and historical fiction and no one comes close to her.
anyways you should pick this book up it's amazing. I hope we get more.
