It reminds me of the Brit TV series The Living and the Dead. Spooky, atmospheric and frankly the best depiction of how my mind worked when I was a child that I have ever heard.

This would be a fantastic movie. Great characterization, excellent build and a spooky story with consistent rules and world building.

A very original take on Regency fantasy

If you are interested in modern social takes in a fantasy regency setting, this is a series for you.
The main character deals with horrifying abuse - mostly in the past and not overly graphic - and struggles to lift herself from the bonds of oppression from her father, former husband and the social and legal constraints faced by women.
Quite nicely weaves in magic of several kinds.
Narrated by virtual voice (computer) in the bland female variety.

Memory Warp Audiobook By Skylar Blaze cover art

I’m not sure a human even went over the result. Several chapters are duplicated, others aren’t remotely Mandela effect examples, so there isn’t even the promised number of examples.
A couple of the chapters end abruptly.
Some terms are completely overused (“research”, “delving deeper”) and though it’s written in the first person, you can’t trust a thing in it.

The prose is adequate but there is no subtlety in it. The premise is dated and obvious.

And it’s read by text to speech. We know what we’re getting into, I mean, the book is set in 1870. With that in mind, look at the cover again. Weird, right?
However, I was surprised by the contents of the book. I did not expect it to be AI written, and I’m 90% sure it was, possibly without a human giving it a read afterwards.
There was no conflict in the book, nothing to overcome. It wasn’t structured like a normal story at all. Certain phrases were repeated frequently and for no reason. About halfway through, suddenly the church and god talk starts, though there was none or nearly none before that.
It was just… weird, and maybe worth a listen as long as you know it for the science experiment that it apparently is.

The automated narrator is actually not that bad on this title. I’m not an in depth expert on the paranormal, but the author is very even handed and points out a lot of links between different sorts of phenomena in a very persuasive manner. I will be looking for more from this author, it’s pretty rare to find a paranormal investigator or compiler that is such an excellent writer as well.

I loved this book. Full of great characters and situations and wonderful interactions.

I was surprised and moved to hear of the author's passing in the 'about the author' at the end of the book. I bought the audio book on reading the first two lines of the publishing blurb, and I had searched to see if he had more available by the time I got to chapter two. I was disappointed to see that he didn't have anything else out, but I was looking forward to adding him to my followed authors as I really enjoyed his narrative voice, the characterization and the setting.

I read and listen to a lot of gamelit/litRPG as it's light enough that I can enjoy it while typing, while enjoying the fantasy elements that I love in the games that I enjoy while I'm NOT typing.

As is true of most genres, there are a few authors that I find outstanding, most are average and some are just not for me. I really don't like cruelty for cruelty's sake or explicit descriptions of torture, and honestly the harem elements present in some are good for an eyeroll and not much else. Heck, in most with the harem element, I actually tend to get confused as to who is who and end up shortcutting to archetypes instead of actual characters to even keep up with the story. Like, "oh yeah, she's the elf". Alpha Test had none of that while it had loads of things that I do enjoy.

I'm very glad that Closed Beta will be released, but, even without knowing him, I miss David Pendleton for what he would have done in the future, and his friends and family have my sincerest condolences on the loss of someone that I could tell, just by hearing this book, was a remarkable man. He will be missed, not only by those that knew him, but those that will know a little bit of him in the future through his work.

No so with this one. The fights are the best-written that I have read or heard in ANY book. Very immersive. I am eagerly awaiting more, greedy as it sounds!
