One of the best 40k Series in the Black Library!
Reviewed: 12-13-19
This novel really sets the stage for the Gaunt's Ghosts series as a whole and is amazing as a stand alone novel aswell. I love how Gaunt is a stern but fair and undeniably decent man, especially in the 41st millennium where all is darkness and war. For a Commissar to share his officer rations with a simple line soldier just shows how he cares for his men and they reciprocate by willingly charging the Jaws of Hell with him.
The Story is very well written, The Narration was perfect, the characters are all so unique. . . I HIGHLY recommend this novel and the entire series to any fan of warhammer 40k.

I loved the story and it had that classic MHI Humor. the only complaint I have is the narrator seems a bit inexperienced, the "Accents" are just her slightly deepening her voice and that slightly takes away from the performance. However her performance of Julie was spot on what I'd think she would sound like. With only that small issue the Audio book as a whole was still amazing. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a great monster hunting story.

Story
A galaxy burns and brother turns on brother as the conflict brought about by a beloved son’s betrayal reaches its fateful end. The Warmaster Horus has triumphed. His massive fleet at last nears Terra and the patriarchal Throne of his hated father. Many have fallen to bring this moment about; their tales are the ashes upon which the Heresy was born and prospered. Others have played their own small parts, drops in an ocean of war and blood. None of it matters. Terra looks to the skies as it raises its defences. Armies muster, heroes raise their swords, citizens cower. The war is coming. And nothing can stop it.

This novel is amazingly written and beautifully voiced. It truly showed the depth of the Emperor's ambition, also shown, if how far removed from humanity he truly is. I highly recommend this for any fan of Warhammer 40k, it really does drive home The Emperor and his dream, before his son destroys it forever.

Dante is Chapter Master of one of the noblest but most troubled Chapters of Space Marines in the Imperium: the Blood Angels. From the time of his birth in the rad-scarred wastes of Baal Secundus, he was destined for glory and strife. From his apotheosis to Scout, to the hive cities of Armageddon and the alien menace of the Cryptus system, Dante has waged war against all the enemies of the Imperium. He has witnessed the divine, and struggled against the darkness within all sons of Sanguinius.
