About this listen

While Horus' rebellion burns across the galaxy, a very different kind of war rages beneath the Imperial Palace.

The 'Ten Thousand' Custodian Guard, along with the Sisters of Silence and the Mechanicum forces of Fabricator General Kane, fight to control the nexus points of the ancient eldar webway that lie closest to Terra, infested by daemonic entities after Magnus the Red's intrusion. But with traitor legionaries and corrupted Battle Titans now counted among the forces of Chaos, the noose around the Throneworld is tightening, and none but the Emperor Himself can hope to prevail.

Makes the Emperor Sympathetic

I liked how the Emperor is portrayed here. He’s a man who has an aura of authority. But still a man. And even though people see him as all powerful he still has limits. Not his own, but those imposed by how psychic power and everyone else work.

It’s great insight into his personal feelings with the Primarchs and how everything is pushing him to one goal. And how getting to that goal requires relying on unreliable tools such as the Primarchs and mankind itself.

The narrator is great and provides a good mouthpiece to all the characters.

One of the few "must-reads" in the Horus Heresy

The Master of Mankind recontextualizes the entire Horus Heresy Saga. It chroncles the secret war waged in the Webway by the Emperor's personal bodyguard, a war with higher stakes than anyone could have imagined. ADB takes this monumental writing challenge and makes it fast paced and visceral, with numerous excellent characters to humanize the conflict between demigods and demons. His handling of the Emperor is perfect, giving the reader leeway to decide if he is a visionary or a hypocrite. Read if you want to understand the tragedy of the Emperor's failed vision... and experience the moment that condemned it to ruin.

A Must Read

How wonderful ADB envisions the fate of the world that had such humble beginnings, as a game played with plastic toys.

Masterfully written and perfectly narrated, this book feels like a pinnacle of what the Horus Heresy series has to offer to their ever-loyal fans.

Sacrifice

Man... this was outstanding

Easily one of the best 40k books I've listened to so far! Outstanding! so much Emperor and Custody content. Tragedy, sacrifice, illumination, hope, loss, apathy, and demons. I wish it had a part II.

The Emperor of Man

I enjoyed how this novel had the most “screen time” of the Emperor out of any of the novels that I have read in the past and how it expanded my understanding of the Emperor.

Humanizing the inhuman

This book does an amazing job of making some of the most powerful and godlike characters feel real, human, and understandable. It's hands down one of the most important books in a while. Everything feels a lot more at stake by the time you've finished this one.
