About this listen

Book five in the Gaunt's Ghosts series.

Gaunt's Ghosts make a daring drop assault on a vital world, but as tensions within the regiment reach boiling point, the enemy may not be the biggest threat....

Listen to It Because

The Ghosts are thrown into a new kind of war, sent into battle on grav-chutes to fight on platforms far above a toxic atmosphere. And the atmosphere in the regiment isn't much better as the feud between Mad Larkin and the really insane Lijah Cuu heats up...and turns deadly.

The story

Gaunt’s Ghosts embark on their most dangerous mission yet as they make a daring drop assault on the world of Phantine. With the elite enemy Blood Pact and vicious xenos mercenaries ranged against them and short of ammunition with no means of escape, things look grim for the Tanith First. But the greatest danger may come from within the regiment as an old grudge is settled and tragedy strikes.

A few cases where stuff repeats. Including one part where an entire sentence repeats like 3 or 4 times.

The story itself is great though

Great story some bad editing.

As usual, Toby Longworth does a most excellent job with his talented narration. A great story by Abnett worthy of Gaunt, but the ending is very frustrating and left a bad taste in my mouth.

Great story...frustrating ending.

The book is well worth the listen, but there are a few points were words or lines were repeated, and had been forgotten in removing. Minor issue.

great book, some editing mistakes

One of the best books in the series. Action packed. with a twist ending, that has made every Ghosts fan rage for a about two decades. seriously give it go. great read.

Great book with a thrilling storyline, ruined by a standard Dan Abnett downer ending.

Ending ruined the rest.

This was a good dive into several movers and shakers in the Ghosts. Tense fighting, too.

Tanith and Verghast are *both* Ghosts

If you've made it to this book in the series, then you're probably already familiar with the high quality writing of Dan Abnett and his space celts that are the Ghosts of Tanith.

This is a solid entry in the series. It doesn't quite have the mystery and thrill of the first book nor the epic scale of the third or the desperate struggle of the fourth, but it nonetheless is enjoyable if you're looking for more harrowing tales from the front (In space).

Toby Longworth's performance as narrator is, once again, exemplary. By now he is basically the voice of most of the Black Library's audio collection, excluding some of the fantastic narration done for the Ciaphas Cain books by Stephen Perring.

The only real gripe I have of the recording, and the reason I rated the performance at only 3 stars, is because there are a few times during the recording that Longworth is forced to restart a passage after stumbling mid-sentence. I'm not sure who does the editing for these recordings, but they've missed the couple of blunders which totally throw off the flow of the narrative. This has actually been an issue for the past several audiobooks of the series, so I hope it gets addressed in further entries.

All in all, the style and tone of the story is sufficiently grimdark and Dab Abnett truly seems to have a grasp on the 40k lore to please any long term fan while making it a good enough story for anyone who isn't familiar with the setting to enjoy. I look forward to the next audiobook to be released.

Another Fantastic Ghost's story, Poorly Edited
