Story
My name is Soldier, but I was never meant to be a hero. From the moment I was born, I was looked at as a beacon of hope, a guiding light—a savior. That type of pressure can drive a man to desperation, to do things he shouldn't, and in my case, that's exactly what happened. All I ever wanted to be was a good person, someone my grandparents could be proud of, but for a long time, I couldn't find the strength to be proud of myself. I paid the price. I did my time. Yet... somehow, I got lucky.

I had previously watched the true blood series but decided to give the audiobooks a try. I have not been disappointed un the least! Such a great story line and so very different from the series on TV. I have LOVED the narrator up until this point. Don't get me wrong she did amazing but her speed changed from the other books so far and you can hear her swallow and make noises with her mouth in this one on occasion. I have misophonia so this was a tad difficult for me to get through. But her accent was spot on and the changing of voices from one character to another was perfect!!

The narrator is "chef's kiss" 💋 perfect! Great story line!! I personally don't care for the repetition of facts about characters in the book. but I can see where it would be a nice refresher if you take a minute to pick up the next book in the series.

The number of times she said "I'm too old for you" is exhausting. I'm not very big on the French scene and it was referenced sooo much. The entire book was basically about their relationship and how they shouldn't be together and the effects it was taking on them. I wish there was more substance. Also, it ended so abruptly compared to the entire narrative. Not one of my favorites but a nice try.

Was waiting for something...more?
Reviewed: 05-10-24
I kept waiting for something...bigger I suppose or some extreme twist. She could've taken the story in so many different directions and it just fell flat for me. It felt extremely rushed at the end after setting up and building up throughout the entire story. I did find myself guessing but in the end it just fell flat.
As for the narrator...I loved her use of different voices for each character and she did an amazing job on the storytelling itself but I hate that it sounded like she was in a box the entire time. I did notice that on the sample but I was really hoping that it wouldn't be the case for the ENTIRE book.
