Story
Charles Warren, Los Angeles attorney, has dedicated his career to aiding people in financial straits. He is particularly skilled at the art of recovering assets that have been embezzled or hidden. In his newest case, helping a beautiful young widow find the money missing from her late husband's investment accounts, Charlie recognizes a familiar scheme—one that echoes the con job that targeted his own widowed mother many years before, and that led him, as a teenager, to commit a crime of retribution that still weighs on his conscience.

My Favorite Narrator
Reviewed: 04-15-24
Thomas Perry is my current favorite author I’ve read many of his books 2 and three times. This latest book doesn’t disappoint. His character development, plot development, and ending are all the best of the best, and he keeps you on your toes until the end. This book is highly recommended. I have seen some negative reviews about the narrator and I couldn’t disagree more. Christina Delaine’s voice is exactly what I imagine for this book. In fact, I have looked up other books she has narrated and purchased a couple of them so far because I like her narration so much. Her voice is rich, and I like the voice changes she uses for the different characters.

So begins a press release from a mysterious group known only as “The Five,” shortly after a vicious predator is murdered in San Francisco. The Five is made up of vigilante killers who are very bored…and very rich. They target the worst of society—rapists, murderers, and thieves—and then use their unlimited resources to offset the damage done by those who they’ve killed, donating untraceable Bitcoin to charities and victims via the dark net. The Five soon become popular figures in the media …though their motives may not be entirely pure.

Jane Whitefield is a Native American guide who leads solitary outcasts through hostile territory to escape the vengeance of their enemies. But the shaded forest paths her Seneca ancestors might have followed on such missions have all been converted to superhighways, and now the safest way stations are crowded urban buildings that offer the camouflage of anonymity. Still, the supply of runaways - and the need for a woman who will take great risks to save them - have never been greater.

I listen to 3 Audible books each week and generally give 5 star reviews, some 4 star. Almost nothing below that because I vet books fairly thoroughly before buying by listening to the sample and reading many reviews. I’m not sure how this one got through my process! Yikes. I didn’t click with the narrator or the story. I tried. Really hard. I’m thrifty so it pains me to give up lol! But I did finally stop my pain 2/3 of the way through. It wasn’t my cup of tea.
