About this listen

Charles Warren, Los Angeles attorney, has dedicated his career to aiding people in financial straits. He is particularly skilled at the art of recovering assets that have been embezzled or hidden. In his newest case, helping a beautiful young widow find the money missing from her late husband's investment accounts, Charlie recognizes a familiar scheme—one that echoes the con job that targeted his own widowed mother many years before, and that led him, as a teenager, to commit a crime of retribution that still weighs on his conscience.

Charlie can't get the present case out of his mind, but within hours of starting his investigation, he is followed, shot at, and has his briefcase stolen. It's clear that someone doesn't want him following the trail of the missing money but, as Charlie continues to pursue answers, he quickly becomes too entangled in the web of fraud, betrayal, and career criminals surrounding the theft to escape its deadly snare.

A nail-biting tale of conspiracy and pursuit from Thomas Perry, "a dominating force in the world of contemporary suspense thrillers" (Publishers Weekly), Pro Bono is sure to have listeners on the edge of their seats.

Deep and Thin

Love Thomas Perry and ALL his books are excellent. Especially the "Butcher Boy" series. However, this story goes DEEP into detail, as Perry does, and it's excellent. But super thin in detail when the main character is attacked with guns and our main character kills the perps. Just skips all the detail as to the happenings with the police etc. Just not what I expected from Perry.

Entertaining legal thriller

This was an entertaining and modestly suspenseful legal novel. A plucky young attorney with a personal history of dealing with a step-father con man forcefully deals with small flocks of grifters and financial service embezzlers to save the personal finances and win the love of a beautiful widow.

Good but frustrating

It was a good story that kept me interested. I disliked when stories get stupid and there were a couple of times when the main character was in a position where they should have called 911 and he didn't. If he had the story would have been shorter but less involved.

Worth the listen, crowd pleaser

Pace and narration and story were strong. Worth a listen if you’re into the author’s other books.

Not Much For Excitement

I'm still a regular reader of Perry, but his early works are still the best. This novel has lots of mundane details to fill out the pages unfortunately. The characters are well-drawn and the plot isn't bad, but it slows down so often that I find myself reading the news, etc, while keeping an ear to the narrative - waiting for something interesting to happen. The narrator works at making it compelling and is quite acceptable. Overall, though, it's just an OK Thomas Perry novel. (Takes the Lord's name in vain.)

Thomas Perry Delivers !

Pro Bono is the latest 2025 from Thomas Perry. In his long career as an Edgar Award winning writer he has lavished on his reading public delightful tales of mystery and clever twists. Pro Bono fulfills this promise. From its opening moments to its conclusion the Cinematic novel play in your brain like a Super Panavision Feature. The plot twists and developments are in the hands of truly gifted craftsman. My Christmas was dull - Thomas Perry lifted my sprits in my daily work. I consumed his novel like a fine Champagne. Taking it in several pieces savoring the plot. Thank you Thomas Perry for delivering a wonderful post Christmas gem!

Not up to his standard.

This is a pedantic quite contrived yarn. I suspect strongly there’s a ghost writer at play because it’s just not up to this authors usual standard. At a minimum a good editor should have been able to shorten several overdone boring passages.
