AI Voice narration
Reviewed: 03-10-24
The narration done by AI is horrible. All characters sound exactly alike, even the 5-year-old child, making it hard to tell who is speaking. There is also no change in tone. Frankly, it almost ruined the book for me. AI is going to have been improved significantly before it becomes viable for narration.

Story
Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

Very disappointing. Nothing is resolved. The listener is just left hanging. And there is no mystery to solve; just a series of life events.

Unbelievable
Reviewed: 03-24-22
Unbelievable action. Main characters too self-congratulatory. Repetitive phrases and descriptions. Author should let the characters' actions show their superiority, instead of constantly telling the reader how wonderful they are.

Badly recorded
Reviewed: 10-22-21
The dialog is so soft that the narration has to be turned way up. If you don't want to be blasted on the narration, you miss what the characters are saying, sometimes missing important information. This is probably not the narrator's fault. It could have been tended to by the recording technician.

Good book, but why?

Why in the world would you hire a British reader for a story set in Massachusetts with a major character from the Bronx, New York City? Both areas have very distinctive accents that would have added greatly to the telling.

Great Story, Annoying Narration
Reviewed: 06-13-21
The constant mispronunciation of the Spanish names and words almost ruined this book for me. I almost stopped listening and deleted this book, even though the story is terrific. Why can't Audible find narrators who are professional enough to learn the pronunciation of foreign words? This narrator also has a very narrow range of tones, making it confusing in figuring out which character is speaking.

Story
To salvage his broken-down ranch, near-bankrupt Ben Pearce devises a hunting scheme, the consequences of which he cannot begin to imagine. The prey: three rare, fierce cats - a leopard and two mountain lions caught in the wild. The predators: an arrogant Texas millionaire, his beautiful but disturbed wife, and their near-psychopathic teenage son. Each of them will hunt one of the animals with only Ben as guide: first the wife, then the son, and finally the Texan.

When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.
