This is Isekai done right.
There’s very little brought from earth or pop references. We delve into a new world with a mc that is believable.
It’s a slow progression but it’s never boring and all the characters feel distinct and well written.
There’s some dark moments that make the pleasant island vibe seem more realistic.

Spectacularly does not land the ending
Reviewed: 01-05-24
Wow the story is good 80% of the book. At the end though it tries to bring the story threads together in such a generic/tropey way. So much so that it invalidates the entire story and journey.
It’s so disappointing that I’m definitely returning.

Story
When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere. Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway.

Story
Deklin will become a villain to rival the gods… somebody should probably tell him. For now, Deklin's just a fourth-year magi looking for a post-midterm vacation from Earth. When a failed portal spell strands Deklin on a dangerous, massive worldshard, he unwillingly embarks on an adventure where spire climbers compete for ever higher standings, and cultivators bind magical aspects to strengthen their spirits. Transformed into a dragonblood and branded as an outlaw, Deklin is forbidden from advancing past the first threshold alongside his growing band of exiles.

It’s not the worst story but it’s not very good. The amount of times the author mentions how smart and capable Deklin is starts to grate after only just the 4th chapter.
I’m not sure what the deal with that is but I’m stopping at chapter 9
You lose a lot of the immersion as well with the pop culture jokes
Again, not a bad book but not good

Story
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

This felt like filler. It had a huge dose of teenage drama and it made the story feel extra YA. It’s not a bad book and I’ll still read the third one but it has none of the magic of the first one.

Reviewed: 08-21-23
The first 3 chapters are some of the worst I’ve ever read. The author obviously wants you to know that the nobles are bad people but does it in such a way that it becomes mind numbing. It becomes almost instantly unbelievable. Yes there are bad people out there but no one acts like this.
I stuck it out till chapter 18 and had to stop. So much of the story ends up taking place in the mc’s head. He’s constantly thinking about random things and brings the pace to a screeching halt.
The Mc also is extra Mary sue and just not very likeable or more like the situations he’s put it to make him appealing to the reader seem so manufactured that it’s off putting.

Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.
