About this listen

The Iron Prince will claim his crown.

Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting.

After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived.

Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers. Squaring off with some of the best Users in the Astra System, they're going to have to put everything they have—as individuals and as a team—into their coming fights if they want to ultimately end up standing at the top. As ever, though, their journey is hardly bound to be a smooth one.

Especially not when Rei and Aria begin to suspect that Shido may be even more formidable than it appears, much less as the powerful entities who've already taken notice of the 'Iron Prince of Galens' begin to make their moves, some casting their hands in his favor, others very much against…

Best book this year!!! I want more!!!

How I have been eagerly awaiting this sequel like no other book I can think off! I am so happy that it was worth the wait. I can't tell you enough about how amazing the world building, character progress and the growth of the entire group.

I couldn't stop listening from the minute I woke up and bought it until I had to call it quits like 3 am and then I was up again around 10 am and finished the book around 4 am. That's just how good it was.

This is what amazing writing looks like!!! I'm telling you don't missout on this book it's the stuff of legends!

My favorite series at the moment.

Great character development across an assorted cast of characters. I like them. I care about them, and I can’t wait to see how they will join together to overcome the tremendous challenges presented by this obviously sadistic author.

Solid follow-up to a fantastic first book

I loved the previous book. Like, a lot. So much so that I subscribed to the author's Patreon. All this to say that I love this story and where it's going overall. I think this was an essential step in Rei's story, even if I have some gripes.
Below, I go into more detail. I also did not hold back on spoilers, so if you continue reading, it is at your own risk.

SPOILERS PAST HERE. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

Things I liked.
Catcher continues to be my favorite character in the story. He has an excellent sense of humor, always keeping Rei humble. We also see some character development from him, as he's willing to stand up to Grant, where he was a bit more timid in the previous book.
In terms of the content, there is one particular chapter that is difficult – emotionally – to get through. Or, at least it was for me, probably because I have a heart. If you read the book, you'll know what chapter I'm talking about. This helped with Grant's character development, but given the mostly light-hearted and exciting nature of the story, it almost felt like it came out of nowhere. Yes, we were looking for Grant's backstory for a while, but when we finally get it, the mood of the backstory doesn't seem to fit the mood of the rest of the book, so I felt it was quite jarring. Probably still my favorite chapter in the book, despite my disagreement on execution.
Combat scenes were written very well. All the group combat and the zero-gravity combat was just so interesting it was phenomenal. That being said, I did think Shido was going to get an external at the end of the book, just because it would be a massive help in the zero-grav environments, and if Shido is sentient, that would be a natural evolution. At the same time, Rei and his team won that fight, so maybe that evolution shouldn't have been prioritized. Just an expectation from the story that wasn't met.
Character interactions. The characters, especially the main 4 from the previous book, are fun to read. I was laughing throughout the story because of the quippy lines. If humanity could be saved through the power of quips, we would be in good hands with these four. It was nice to see Grant and Cashe warming up to the group as well.

Things I didn't care for.
First, there seems to be a lack of struggle by Rei in the book. One of the best things about book 1 was that we got to see Rei struggle through the E- and D-ranks to get to the top of his class. Now he's at the top of his class, there doesn't seem like there's anyone else to challenge him, aside from Aria herself. In book 1, Rei was the underdog, and we love cheering for underdogs in stories. This time, however, he's the one on top of the dog pile. Everything that he does happens "to him", as opposed to him struggling through those difficulties in book 1. Near the beginning of the book, Central ups the difficulty of the defensive test *massively*, nearly killing him (it seems like). He comes out of it stronger than ever. At the end of the book, someone rigs his final SCT fights, once again massively hurting his body. He recovers and is stronger for it. However, these are the two most significant trials that he has to overcome, but they are done by some unknown, outside entity. Because of the faceless nature of his opponent, whether it's Central or whoever, it makes the main character feel more passive, when we're looking for him to be more active in the story. I don't just want things to happen to him.
This actually brings me to my second point, closely related to the first point, which is that we don't really have an antagonist in the story. In book 1, we had Grant, which was awesome. At the end of the book, Rei becomes so strong that he's able to (albeit barely) defeat Grant in combat. That was so great. However, this book lacks anyone who Rei has to "grind their face into the field hard enough" to show his growth over the story. With Grant, we had a solid idea of the gap in strenght, and we wanted Rei to bridge the gap. This book comes in with Rei already being strong, and he just... stays strong. I wanted someone for Rei to fight at the end. Someone who wasn't Aria, to show the impressive progress that Rei and Shido have made. Based on Rei's interactions with Sidorov, we will get that in the next book, so I'm hoping that will be an improvement, and this will only be a temporary "gripe".
Third, a good portion of the book was about Rei and Aria's relationship. However, the relationship was never in danger in the book. It didn't feel as if there was any danger of the relationship ending. They started off liking each other, and they just sort of continued liking each other. There's a lack of tension between the two of them that gives me the sense that their relationship won't last. Real, long-term relationships are rocky, and there were no rocks in the relationship in this book.
Fourth, Viv... I feel as if Viv shows a lot of character in the story, but she shows absolutely no growth. Her character and her relationship to Rei is sort of set in stone in the book. If you want to know what she acts like, it's the exact same as what we got in book 1. She's interesting now, but she's going to have some development to do in the next book, or I might be in danger of writing her off as interesting after that. A character can be interesting in the moment because they are new, but part of why characters are interesting over the course of the story is by their growth.
Fifth, Grant... same objection as with Viv, however... HOWEVER. He gets a pass, because we learn more about his background. We get to know him better as a character, which means it feels like his character developed. Even if he didn't really change all that much. Still an ass, but he's working on it.

Lastly, this is an audiobook, so I have to include that Luke Daniels did a phenomenal job, once again. I expected nothing less, and he did not disappoint.

So, why the 3-star on the story, since I had all those "things I didn't care for"? Because, like I mentioned in the intro, I thought the book was an essential step Rei's story. I may not like that there are less interesting books in the overall story arc, but that doesn't make it any less essential to the overall plot of what's happening in the universe. I'm looking forward to where this is going in the future, and I'll continue to support Bryce in its development.

I’m excited to see where it goes.

I read a few of the negative reviews and felt compelled to contradict them.

There is a lot of dramatization of the characters, which I appreciate. The action was good, but despite this being closer to a “chosen one” trope it’s not all about how badass Ward is. Which is good.

The team drama didn’t feel forced AND was done well. There is obviously tension and it built. Most of the scenes I really really liked are completely character driven. I like my hero’s with personality developed, thank you.

SPOILER LIKES + DISLIKES after this line:

- I hope it’s not going to be a trend that Ray powers up every time he ends up in a hospital bed. Zen’kai boost were BS in dragon ball, it’s becoming a regular thing to literally cripple him to get stronger.
- Logan. My God, what a wonderful train wreck of a character. His backstory chapter was tragic, beautifully somber. Big ups to the Narrator for making it feel so real.
- Aria, originally wasn’t a fan of the accent change but it grew on me. I liked it more by the end. ALSO her confrontation at the end with the General, love it.
- Captain Dent Vs. Major, satisfying.
- Boneyard fight, one of my favorites. I loved Boneyard’s PoV section.
- Ray’s family drama, messy, curious what’s gonna happen.
- tournament: didn’t realize war games and team battles were different. Needed a bit more clarity on the structure since it’s now a main stay in the story.
- Zero Gravity - it was done better in the first book. Perhaps a spectator PoV would be better in the future.
- Cashe - felt like an unnamed side character with a name, less relevant in the story than Van Dem. I’m sure it was done for pacing every other teammate of Fire Song is fleshed out decently, her not having a real moment was a bummer.
Aria’s Mom - Wasted side story. Why put in the effort to establish she was a morally questionable with contacts with bad company with her only interaction being with a character we just met? Seemed unnecessary, would’ve been better if it was condensed into just 1 chapter of her son.

Another amazing chapter…

After waiting in suspense after the previous book, this continuation did not disappoint. The plot was just as gripping as the previous iteration, and narration was once again great!

Better than average writing,

However author leans heavily into LGBTQRS+++ and YA. Reader changed the voices from the first novel. Considering it was years between book 1 and 2, not surprising, yet some of the character voices are inferior imo. Good ending to this book.

Outstanding

So glad to have come across this series, and glad Bryce took the time he needed to complete it. Luke Daniels is always my favorite narrator as well, which he continued to demonstrate here.
